A Peace Offering to Evangelicals

This is a very, very important quote, from a source I hope is informed and worth our attention:

“To tell you the truth, I feel like there are literally millions of evangelical Christians that don’t have a home right now,” Hunter said

Who said this? Go read the whole thing and find out. But here’s my offer: Christians, I offer you an atheist olive branch. Come back to the teachings of Your Lord, and I will link hands with you. I mean this in honest, heartfelt sincerity. Really.

I have always said, and meant with an honest mind and heart, that when true Christians act like the Christ I’ve read about, I’ll stop complaining about their desire to be a part of a secular government. It’s simple, really. As I understand “Him,” he was in favor of things like succor to the poor, equal rights for all, no matter what their “orientation,” taking care of those who the state oppressed, and the disentanglement of government, money and religion. He also seemed to be in favor of equal rights for women, an end to public and private hypocrisy, and the generally cool idea of “live and let live” or “treat others as you’d like to be treated.” All good in my book.

Seriously, this is a New Age, or at least, one of Democratic control of Congress. I’m willing to let bygones be bygones, stop harassing religionists, and otherwise tamp down on the rabid atheism thing, if believers really embrace the idea that they need to set aside the politics of ’making our leaders in DC richer,’ and instead focus upon the mantra, ’what can I do for my fellow human being?’

I didn’t start this war, but I’m happy to end it. Rae? Care to join us? If you can accept me, I can agree to disagree on those points about my life that are in fact minor to your creed and faith. Because, like so many of the actually oppressed, I believe we’ll find we have more in common with each other than we do with those who seek to keep us fighting. For their benefit.
