About Obama's Supreme Court short list...

lambert's picture

Read BTD immediately.

Roe is a bright shiny object.

What the people who are now running the Democrat Party, and their presumptive nominee, are all about, alas, is consolidating and rationalizing Bush's authoritarian gains.

Otherwise, Cass Sunstein [spouse of Samantha "Monster" Power] wouldn't be anywhere near Obama, let alone one of his advisors.

And that's why the Dems cheerfully gutted the Fourth Amendment ad granted retroactive immunity to the telcos with FISA [cough] reform, for which Professor of Constitutional Law Obama voted YEA.

NOTE I would say, if you've got any money, and you care about the Constitution, give it to Strange Bedfellows, and not to the Dems. Not even, since money is fungible, to downticket Dems. Sorry.

Repealing Roe is the Obamanation boogeyman.

"McCain will appoint anti-choice SCOTUS justices!"

Big effen deal, they already have 5 votes if they want them.

Roe Is Another One of Those Issues

where I think the parties - as opposed to their supporters - largely agree. Roe will not be overturned. It's too risky for both parties. Better that the Dems use it to keep the wimmin folks in line and the GOP use it to do the same with the evangelicals.

So I don't think Roe is very different than FISA. It's another area where we've seen more unity than is good for those of us who care about this particular fundamental right.

What we've seen is the slow erosion of rights under Roe (and Doe) for the past 30 years. I fully expect that to continue. The Democratic Party overall (with individual exceptions, of course) has done nothing to stop it and I think Obama's right-wing framing of abortion signals that this will continue. They are not going to upset the status quo because it's good for them even if it's not good for the women who have to drive 3 hours for an abortion. After all it won't affect anyone they know or any of their donors. Women with money can always get abortions.

Now, the rightwing is taking its Roe strategy of chippiing away at access and starting to apply it to birth control. Some Dems have objected (Clinton, Murray, Pelosi), but I haven't heard nearly enough outrage, IMO. The right has cleverly dressed it up as a matter of faith - letting doctors opt out of providing contraception if it conflicts with their faith - but what it's really about is decreasing the access to contraception and trying to change public support for it by calling it abortion. I'm very interested to see what, if anything, Obama does about this. Will he call out the Bush efforts for what they are - not an exercise in religious freedom, but a restriction on a fundamental right of women. Or will he allow the framing to stand. Which way he goes on this issue will probably tell us a lot about how much he's williing to compromise on women's rights to try to win over social conservatives.

NOTE - I've been swamped in RL, so Obama or his campaign may have already stated a position and I missed it.

Dear Anyone Who Thinks We Should STFU Around Here

I strongly urge you, before posting further, to invest the time to follow Lambert's link to TalkLeft and read BTD's links and comments.

A Democratic insurrection is needed. I don't know what the hell this game is that the Obama wing is playing with the wingnuts, but we must object to whatever disease our party has that draws them to people like Sunstein. It should go without saying that Obama cannot be allowed to put any creature resembling Sunstein on the Supreme Court.

Agree BD

Remember when no one believed that the anti-abortion right had any bigger agenda than stopping abortion--that it really was about their beliefs? I never bought it that much--only a few ever adopted anyone or even contributed that much to other people raising kids which I thought was a give-away of what they were really doing (not that many weren't in earnest besides the leadership.)

BUT when Terry Randall said they had achieved a lot in limiting abortions in a lot of states and then came out against homosexuality (his personal circumstances aside), and followers went along, I thought that really gave it away.

It's amazing that they are going against contraception though--and a number of people are going against contraception that has no possible "it's really an abortion" content--not only some birth control pills but some are against condoms. Agreed, Obama needs to come up with more against this...and I don't like funding for abstinence education.

But Cass is POST-PARTISAN

didn't ya get the memo?

C'mon, especially when you're inexperienced, it's just SO MUCH EASIER to govern with all those extra powers--those little Amendments were just pesky. What did they have to do with anyone's life anyway?

The Democrat party,

The Democrat party, Lambert? One of the worst republiconisms usually uttered, sneered, spat by republicons (all worst) and always inflicting a turning of the knife in my belly feeling. So, must you?
And I just like my language, English, so there's an ic there but not there and ....I'll shut up now. JC

lambert's picture

They can earn the -ic back

Or do you call gutting the Fourth Amendment Democratic? Leaving aside the whole RBC Clusterfuck.

The reason it feels like a knife is because it ought to.

Words, words

But it's still my party and I've earned the ic and why you would want to turn that knife in me is the question.
"The reason it feels like a knife is because it ought to." I keep re-reading that. It's either brilliant or drivel. "The reason it feels like a knife is because it ought to." Of course, that's the intention. I react with nausea. Do I win something? More conditioning, word conditioning? Words don't mean as much anymore, though. Been watching their power die for years now. Sad.
But I can adjust and I can understand the desire to brand the fake democrats in power with the absence of the ic. I'm not defending them, Lambert. And they're only words, fairly trivial, and I'll adjust, I'm sure.
Take care, Jan

Branding the fake democrats

My reaction was as visceral as yours, Recluse. I want the rebranding too, but can we find something else?

lambert's picture

And what better rebranding...

... for the faction of the Democratic Party that is now, horror film style, going to morph or meld or merge with the Republican Party than the same slur those same Republicans used against them for years?

The Formerly Known as Democratic (FKD) Party

My proposal. The acronym stings me personally, but as Lambert says, perhaps it needs to.

lambert's picture

To parallel Prince...

This should be: TPFKAD, The Party Formerly Known as Democratic.

Or perhaps we could invent a symbol?

But then we can't say the acronym out loud

as the "fucked" party.
