"An impeachment is not a constitutional crisis. Impeachment is the cure for a constitutional crisis."

That quote was from an amazing, wonderful clip from the amazing, wonderful Crooks & Liars with Bill Moyers, John Nichols, and Bruce Fein.

It's especially relevant today:

Bastille Day.

Go listen right now.

And Bruce Fein: "They're asserting theories of government that are monarchical."

Bingo. I couldn't agree with Fein more. I don't want anybody exercising monarchical power. Say, where are Hillary and Obama on signing statements?

I'm sold. Impeachment now. I'm sorry it took so long.

I thought Nichols made

I thought Nichols made another telling point. He said that Bush will be handing a toolbox of powers on to the next President. He doesn't care if it's Hillary, Barack or Mitt, he doesn't want them to have those powers. So impeachment is notice from Congress of what is not acceptable from any President.

I wish someone would ask the Dems in one of those debates what they plan to do as President to actively undo what Bush has wrought. Will they shut down the NSA datamining operation? Close Guantanamo? Outlaw kidnapping? Declare that there is no such thing as an illegal enemy combatant? Stop absolute secrecy in the executive? etc etc

they'll tell ya what ya wanna hear...
won't make a shitting bitta difference, though.
if Congress does not compel the busheviks to repudiate those practices, any subsequent regime--Puke or Dumb--will endeavor to arrogate unto itself the same powers...

That motherf*cker Ford's Pardon of Nixon

was what set up the current crisis.

Any future president will appropriate the precedents that the Busheviks have worked hard to accrue for themselves--
if the Busheviks depart at all...
if the Dims wuss out on this--like they do on everything--

In the C&L clip it says...

... some rank and file Democrats went to the leadership, and said we've got to continue with the impeachment, and the leadership (the sainted Tip O'Neill) turned them down "because the country had suffered enough."

And Nixon went on to express no remorse and was allowed to appear to rehabilitate himself.

One of the speakers makes the excellent point that this infantilizes the citizenry -- I mean, who was doing the suffering? Criminals, really, and what's wrong with that?

We had our heel on these guy's throats and the law and the Constitution on our side, thirty years ago, and we let up. The results are as you see, with the same guys coming back like a three-bean-salad.

Every American Should See That Show

For those that missed it, the PBS transcript is available. Hopefully, in the future they will put up the entire video.

Lotta red meat there.

The Bill of Rights is a born rebel. It reeks with sedition. In every clause it shakes its fist in the face of constituted authority. . . . it is the one guaranty of human freedom to the American people. - Frank Irving Cobb

Leah also caught Moyers in a real whopper...

... which I hope she'll post on. Accidental, I'm sure, but it's amazing how our history can be taken from us.
