An Inconvenient Truth about Imus and America

Matt has the goods on Mr. Nappy Headed Hos, but I want to chime in on this from another perspective. Simply: America is filled with racist white folks who don't think they are racists and who find nothing wrong in Imus' comments. These people are afraid of Black men on the street at night, they make jokes about nappy heads and thick lips with regularity, and they will never vote for Obama.

Imus is fairly popular, and has been for a long time. Millions listen to his show. This isn't the first racist thing he's said, nor the worst. Ask youself: why then is he so popular? Because racist white people want to hear their views made legitimate and normalized. And that's exactly what our media does. Imus should be fired, and he may yet be. But I don't kid myself, he's one voice among many, and most of them will carry on in his tradition with no threat to their employment. I could spend all afternoon over at MediaMatters pulling racist quotes from popular and influential figures in our media and not break a sweat. Racism is popular. It's really that simple.

Well, CD

Imus paid a price. 2 weeks suspension on radio and tv.

I wonder if we can get to Beck and Rush? Jake

2 weeks = 40 acres and mule

he didn't lost his job, right? so wow, i don't care he gets to take a paid vacation from his back breaking labor as an on air racist moron.

we will never get rush, because he serves a purpose for the dominionists. we won't get beck, because he too serves a purpose for those same people. we won't get imus, because he's syndicated to such a point that he could fart on air for two hours a day, and advertisers would still pay to be part of the show.

eyeballs/ears/etc. that's what determines who is on your TV and radio. which, today, is all about the lowest common denominator. which means imus stays. for the long haul.

i want to be wrong in this.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
