In the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primaries two of the lowest vote getters were Rudy Giuliani and Dennis Kucinich.

After each of their poor showings, Giuliani’s and Kucinich’s campaign spending choices and comments about them were quite telling.

Rudy Giuliani’s senior campaign staffers will forgo paychecks this month.

When asked about it, Giuliani stated:

“We have quite a bit of money and they wanted to make sure we had even more money at the end of this situation in Florida. So that we could have, I guess, that we had enough on the air or whatever.”

He was later asked if he thought his campaign would have enough funds remaining after the Florida Primary on January 29th to compete on February 5th’s Super Tuesday.

“Yeah, we’ll have some,” noted Giuliani. “But frankly Florida is really important to us, so we are gonna put if not everything into Florida, almost everything.”

Dennis Kucinich’s campaign announced on January 10th that the candidate would seek a recount of the New Hampshire primary votes. Why?

Because of the unexplained disparities between hand-counted and machine-counted ballots in New Hampshire, Dennis has asked for a recount. “I am not making this request in the expectation that a recount will significantly affect the number of votes that were cast on my behalf,” Dennis said in his letter to the Secretary of State of New Hampshire. But, he cited “serious and credible reports, allegations and rumors” that question the integrity of the machine-controlled process.

From the New Hampshire press release:

Secretary of State William M. Gardner will estimate the cost of the recounts, which must be paid by the candidate(s) for the recount to proceed.

So as Rudy stocks up cash on the backs of senior staffers’ livelihoods in the name of making sure his candidacy has enough money to go the distance in Florida, Kucinich is spending campaign money to assure that our democratic process goes the distance.
