Another historic first?

Richardson is withdrawing his name from appointment as Commerce Secretary. A federal grand jury has been investigating some NM government contracts awarded to a California company since at least mid-December.

Richardson say he's done nothing wrong (of course not! what are you, a racist?), but does not want to delay confirmation hearings.

Obama is deeply regretful, showing praise on Richardson as

an outstanding public servant and would have brought to the job of Commerce Secretary and our economic team great insights accumulated through an extraordinary career in federal and state office. It is a measure of his willingness to put the nation first that he has removed himself as a candidate for the Cabinet in order to avoid any delay in filling this important economic post at this critical time.

NYT, among others, has the story.

There must be other examples of a pending Secretary 'resigning' before confirmation hearings, I just can't think of any right now. I see this has come up in the comments already. No witty analysis here, just a visceral reaction that it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

too funny -- NYT brings up Blago too --

but it has implications for Hillary also, maybe.

(i won't believe she'll get SOS til i see it)

Contrast Blago

I was wondering whether the O team might hold this up in contrast to Blago's actions. Richardson hasn't been indicted, the investigation is still at the grand jury stage, so that much is different, but since The Village has already convicted Blago without a trial, why not Richardson as well? Oh wait, I forgot, he's on Obama's team. Nevermind.

Howard Dean out at DNC

WaPo reporting that Tim Kaine will take over this month as chair of the Democratic National Committee. He will work part-time for DNC while finishing as governor of Virginia and go full-time at DNC in January 2010. Does this mean they are moving the DNC back to Washington, DC?

And, in more fun political news, Terry McAuliffe has announced that he will run for governor of Virginia in the next election.

they have to move it back to DC --

especially now that Chicago's dirt is all over the media.

they always had to tho -- the DC Village is where it belongs.

KAINE?!?!

And the anti-woman hits just keep on coming.

I guess this tells us all we need to know about the Democrats commitment to reproductive rights, huh?

I think we are just supposed to be grateful

that Kaine wasn't the VP-pick?

Naw, Obama never cared what we wanted anyway, grateful or not.

US Attny scandal

I wonder if this isn't a political hit job by a hack Bushie US Atty.

Always a possibility

But then, why Richardson? Is he especially threatening to Repubs? Or just the most vulnerable (or with the best paper trail)? Obama will just appoint someone else, obviously, would they have any reason to believe that person would be more amenable to their interests? Given Richardson's syncophancy, and the signals so far that Obama's administration is more likely to play along with the Village's interests than against it, why would they care about Richardson? He's unlikely to implement any blazingly liberal policies as Sec. Commerce.

It could be sheer Republican cussedness, sure. Or part of a campaign to pile up the doubts and hamstring Obama as much as possible. But among the many, many kinds of damage the Republicans have done to the justice system by hyper-politicizing investigations and prosecutions is the automatic assumption that any investigative target is innocent and only being targeted based on politics. But the corruption of the Republicans isn't proof of clean hands on the part of Democrats. Corruption accompanies power regardless of party.

I have no idea whether Richardson's hands are clean or not. I'm going to wait on evidence (if there is any) and not just the allegations put forth by the prosecution (same for Blago, seriously), there's no need yet to play those reindeer games.

But IF, and I have no proof on this score whatsoever, part of the reason Richardson is being dumped is because his old friends in power aren't willing to expend their political power to help him after the primaries, and his new friends aren't willing to support him because they never were the great new light of world unity and never gave a cr*p about him anyway, I certainly won't be sad. That would, after all, be the lesson of nearly every afterschool special ever recorded.

the spotlight is now on all this stuff bec of Blago--

it's also why Pritzker removed herself first.

they are not willing to defend the same shit when it comes to Richardson -- or others. it all rebounds too directly onto Obama -- and also gives the GOP even more ammunition.

Name 5 Commerce Secs

Hell, name three. Much of Richardson's career has been based on his ambition and grand-standing, this is not a position suited to that 'talent'. Richardson whored himself out during the primary in the most transparent (and complete) way possible and made no secret at all that he wanted SOS in return. Seeing it go to Clinton, then getting the Commerce appointment, and no face-saving way to back out, must have been crushing. Just the meagerest reacharound.

Having a semi-reasonable excuse for getting out of this appointment is the best thing that ever happened to Richardson.

"Why did transition ignore long history of dubious dealings?"

Why Did Obama's Transition Team Ignore Bill Richardson's Long History of Dubious Dealings? --

The wreck of Bill Richardson, who withdrew earlier today as President-elect Obama’s nominee for Commerce Secretary, surely should have been anticipated by the Obama vetters. As previously reported by Mother Jones, the New Mexico governor has, over the last decade, left behind a wide trail of questionable business dealings, many of them involving the energy industry.

Obama's transition team apparently chose to ignore these past whiffs of scandal. They also seem to have been unfazed by the current federal investigation into a possible pay-to-play scandal, which was already well underway when Richardson’s nomination was announced on December 3. Within two weeks of the nomination, the media was widely reportingthat Richardson was the subject of a grand jury probe in a “highly active stage.” ...
