Snake oil salesman [SOS]

It’s official now, as it has been proclaimed from on high. We are now the United States of Omerica.

The following is excerpted from a hilarious posting by the Times of London:

“…And suddenly, with the men appeared the archangel Gabriel and the whole host of the heavenly choir, ranks of cherubim and seraphim, all praising God and singing: “Yes, We Can.”

Sure, it’s a spoof but it has an eery tone of warning [SOS!], suggesting that if we looked beyond the hype of the BO campaign and the infatuation of the media we would see the snake oil salesman made famous in countless Westerns. With the oratorical, persuasive talents these guys had, they could sell refrigerators to Eskimos.

The Ongoing Awfulness of Michael Mukasey

I have written previously about how the administration will be more concerned with covering its tracks than anything else in its final months, and recently the pace has picked up. Maybe the passage of the new FISA bill kicked it off in the same way Memorial Day informally starts summer in America (and Labor Day ends it - you can keep all your fancy solstices and equinoxes). Whatever the cause though, the effort is underway to run out the clock, cloud the law and excuse the guilty. A key leader is Michael Mukasey.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- A large cat believed to be a mountain lion has been spotted by several people around College Park.

Under the circumstances, I thought this was just plain funny.

Obama doesn't like Rap star attacking Bush and McSame

Ludacris 'Should Be Ashamed' Of Lyrics Bashing Bush And McCain, Says Barack Obama Rep

But those aren't the lyrics that have displeased the Obama team. On the song, 'Cris expresses other thoughts on the political climate, calling Hillary Clinton "irrelevant" and insinuating that Jesse Jackson's apology to Obama for some recent crude statements wasn't genuine. Like many of his peers, he also complains about President George W. Bush's "poor" job while in office. "McCain don't belong in any chair unless he's paralyzed/ Yeah I said it, 'cause Bush is mentally handicapped," Luda raps.

Hipparchia

Via mail, a reader asks:

Has anybody heard from Hipparchia, and is she (?) OK?

Truth and truthiness, redux

Discuss:

i'd actually be ok with truthiness in service to good ends-- Submitted by amberglow on Tue, 2008-06-03 11:11.

if there was real progress and fighting behind it that would practically and substantially improve lives and opportunity for all, and the truthiness was in service to the reality of our needs, and simply another tool in a vast and effective arsenal.

politics kinda demands something other than the whole truth

often, i think.

You and I are losses in insurance industry lingo.

INSIDE AN INSURANCE INDUSTRY DENIAL MACHINE

The first concept you need to understand is the Medical loss ratio. You and I are losses in insurance industry lingo.

The medical loss ratio refers to the percentage of dollars actually spent on medical care versus administrative costs or profit. The higher the ratio, the more money is being spent on actual delivery of care. Components of the medical loss ratio include payments to physicians, hospitals, pharmacists and other providers of health care.

Campaign Updates and Media Headlines 7/31/08

The Note: Inevitability, Now (ABC News)
The latest entry in the (bulging) Obama files: "This is the moment . . . that the world is waiting for," he told House Democrats Tuesday night, per The Washington Post's Jonathan Weisman. "I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions."… Toss in a jettisoned faux-presidential seal, a canceled visit with troops, maybe a sprinkling of broken promises, and you've got enough to weave an uncomfortable yet unforgettable suit.
Rather, Senator Obama, you have MADE yourself into a symbol, one that is not accepted by everyone, even in your party.—Caro
