And now Obama's using a 20-year-old Jeff Gerth story to attack Hillary. My gawd, anybody who does oppo that lame doesn't deserve to be President!
Worse, Plame traitor Robert Novak played "Let's you and him fight" with Hillary and Obama about a fantasy scandal--and Hillary and Obama fell for it!

This after an entire week of ginned up crapola about whether Hillary "stumbled," played the "gender card," the "bitch" thing*, and on and on and on. All fake! First, the SCLM
injected those memes into the discourse, and then Edwards and Obama started using them! She looks bad, they look bad, they all look bad. Can they imagine that wasn't the plan?
And then, at the end of the week, the narrative shifted to Hillary's "comeback"! From the faked "stumble" the week started out with! And why? Because she looked good in "debate" sponsored by the Village elders! All fake, all manufactured, a false narrative from beginning to end.
When oh when will the Democrats understand that the Village is a strategic liability for Democrats? Any cup that the Village proffers a Democrat will be a poisoned chalice. Don't drink it!

Obama fell for it
There is no way that Hillary's campaign could have not commented on Obama's challenge without seeming to confirm what Novak had written.
What Obama's campaign should have done was to call out Novak, i.e., to demand him to give more evidence and talk his sources into going public, and politely invited Hillary to join him in denying that there is a scandal lurking and that she would allow her campaign to traffic in the politics of personal destruction. It seems that Obama is now all about showing that he is a manly man. (pause to vomit) Is he actually listening to Maureen Dowd.

You know this attacking your own party and your fellow candidates never works for Democrats - and especially it doesn't work when what is used to attack are essentially rightwing tropes.

Your title question is a wonderful trope - says it all. Whose approval do they seek, the Washington boobahs or that of the rest of us.
Clearly, congressional Democrats and party Democrats understood the Social Security issue, and they, along with help from blogtopia, (thank-you Skippy), defeated Bush as completely as he's been defeated on any issue.
