Arthur Silber needs a laptop or at least a techie

Because his overheated computer is crashing all the time.

Now, if only we could do something for his overheated imagination. [Ouch! Ducks second zuchinni]

Note: lambert, the problem with the PC may not be overheating, although heat is probably not helping it now.

It sounds like somebody needs to visit Mr. Silber and make a complete backup for him, then reformat the hard drive (right down to blowing out the partitions) and start the system over. The symptoms he describes are fairly classic for a malware infestation.

And if anybody's got a Win98 or Win 98SE laptop laying around collecting dust, drop me an email!

if there's a power port for a wall-wart, no.

What it needs, Lambert, is to be formatted -- and donated to Silber, running a Linux setup with Firefox. Can you do that?

Reading Arthur's post just tears me up--dammit, but our society

is totaly unbalanced, out of whack, off kilter. There is something so wrong with the lack of universal healthcare, the wretched misdistribution of wealth and income, the push to buy, buy, buy when so many scrape by.

I was chatting with my garbage guys this week (the greatest team in my township--they never throw the containers around, but set them against the curb or on the lawn, unlike some of the workers--and I wanted their names to write a letter of appreciation). They showed me big black garbage bags filled with clean, decent clothing, loads of socks, children's clothes, adult clothing, some still with the dry cleaner bags on them... Amazing.

They said it was probably a foreclosed house, where people, after trying to hang on, had been forced out by the bank and the sheriff. Leaving almost everything--no time to move stuff themselves, no money for movers, and maybe no place to go. Then, the foreclosure clean-out teams come in and throw everything away. Evern single thing. I wasn't sure it was one of those teams bcz I thot they tended to use dumpsters--but maybe for some things they utilize the local garbage pickup. Who knows....

But, there's no time to call homeless shelters or halfway houses. Probably not "cost effective."

The garbage guys had put a stuffed Mickey Mouse on a stuffed zebra as a mascot for the day, wedged into some pipes at the rear of the truck. Cheery and cute, but sad bcz they had been some kids' toys....

I'll bet there are perfectly good computers tossed into dumpsters every day.

What a mess.
