A day comes when your heart breaks, because of someone you love, who cannot speak your language. Perhaps your heart breaks often; perhaps not. Perhaps your heart breaks for someone who has lived a long life, but whose part in your life is not — you are not ready to allow to be — finished. Perhaps your heart breaks for someone you have never met, who has touched you across the distance with heroism, with grace, with beauty, with trust, with helplessness. Perhaps your heart breaks because you cannot do enough to help, have not long enough arms or big enough hands to encompass a solution, simply lack the funds to make right the one injustice staring back at you. Or perhaps you love someone who is not as other people are. Perhaps you love someone beautiful and far away, an impossible dream of a love; perhaps you love someone next to you, who doesn’t know you’re alive: another impossible dream of a love. Or maybe, for a moment, your love takes you out of all the normal crap of your everyday life. There have been too many days filled with heartbreak lately. From amid the cheering you can bring home only sadness. From any victory you can feel only a sense of what should have been. Atop a mountain of honors, you know the foundation is crumbling. These are heartbreaking days. These are times to treasure the love before it is taken, before it is lost, before someone you love dies.
