Barack Obama: “I just want all of you to pray that I can be an instrument of God….”
Justice David Souter: “Government should not prefer one religion to another, or religion to irreligion.”
Barack Obama: “I think it’s important particularly for those of us in the Democratic party to not cede values and faith to any one party.”
George Will: “100% of the American electorate are values voters; they vote their values… And this, this, kind of semantic imperialism that they have where they say ’we vote values.’ Everyone else votes what?”
Barack Obama: “I am confident that we can create a Kingdom right here on Earth.”
Arthur: “I am your king!”
Woman: “Well, I didn’t vote for you.”
Update:
There’s more, and it burns!
Obama told the audience that people ask him, “‘What role does faith play?’ I say, ‘It plays every role.’”
And…
“My job is to try to draw a connection between the values that I express to the church and the challenges and issues that we face in politics.”
As Jamie Raskin once said:
“Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You didn’t place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.”
Finally, an Obama-ite on Democratic Underground lays it all out for us:
“I would rather pick up 20 percent of the evangelical vote and I would gladly sacrifice 80% of the atheists if that is what it takes.”
God Bless Obama’s America!
More of Barack serving church and state on the same plate:

sigh. i didn't vote for a king either.
can you just shut the fuck up with the gawd babble, obama? krist. at least leave out the parts about what “we” can all do together. i am most decidedly not taking part in the rapture.
good luck with that cd

I Actually May Have To Abstain From Exercising My Franchise
Hillary’s a Neo-Liberal
, Globalist, CONSERVATIVE “Democrat”-Corporatist
-War-hawk. One Clinton was plenty.
Obama’s a little less Neo-Lib (though still well within the fold), a Globalist, and a CONSERVATIVE Corporatist God-hawk.
Neither Edwards, nor anyone else, will get the nomination as long as the former two are alive.
So I’ll likely stay home.
A Quick Study, But A Slow Learner
Woody, you know who won't be staying at home on election day?
I hope the Republicans remember to thank you for your non-vote.
Agreed, VL, 100%
I’ll vote for the merely bad as opposed to the batshit insane any day of the week, especially since the Kool-Aid drinkers will be out in force….
We. Are. Going. To. Die. We must restore hope in the world. We must bring forth a new way of living that can sustain the world. Or else it is not just us who will die but everyone. What have we got to lose? Go forth and Fight!—Xan
VL--I'm pretty sure "who votes" no longer matters very much...
The franchise is no better than a political kabuki, designed to reassure the yokels, but not much else…
(Tinfoilly) I’m pretty sure the Pukes engineered their “losses” last year to ensure the Dems HAVE to bear some reponsibility for the Bushevik world-wide disasters.
You may not have noticed (mebbe you’re younger than me? i dunno), but in the almost 50 years I’ve been watching this stuff, things almost never—really, “never”—revert to their earler, more innocent, idealist conditions. The Pukes have learned how to manipulate the counting, reliably. As Stalin (is reputed to have) said: It doesn’t matter who votes; what matters is who counts the votes. They’ll never abandon the technology of electoral corruption; it’s worked so well. And the Congress will ALWAYS leave a loop-hole in ANY legislation it passes to regulate future conditions.
I always knew the American Democracy was delicate, and that its opponents were numerous. But I never really thought I would watch it fall.
A Quick Study, But A Slow Learner
Woody, I don't begrudge you your disillusion...
… about the state of American democracy and the Democratic Party.
But if I have an opportunity to help sway us toward the lesser of evils — or, should an Edwards or a Gore get the nomination — much better than that, I’ll do it in a heartbeat.
If Hillary and Obama aren’t models of progressive thought and action, they aren’t evil or batshit crazy like the GOP’s cast of characters, and whichever survives our badly compromised primary process will get my vote over any Bush’s Third Term candidate.
"Bush's third term candidate"
I like that one, VL. Let’s propagate it.

If Hillary and Obama
I have yet to be convinced of that.
There are no national incumbents
who cannot reliably be called evil at this time.
If you want a good President, go with Edwards.
Gore isn’t going to run. He’s smarter than that. There’s no upside to running for him.
Thompson is a nonstarter financially as well as philosophically. Really, the guy thinks he can parlay his lawnorder role into the White House? I don’t think even GOP voters are going to stay that delusional.

The cynic in me (moi?) wonders...
… if Thompson will benefit from his Chauncey Gardiner empty-suit approach. People will be wowed if he says one vaguely witty or sensible thing.
As for whether Hillary and Obama are as evil as the Repubs, I suppose it’s like pornography, you know it when you see it. They’re compromised equivocators, to be sure, but they don’t lie awake dreaming of ways to kick the poor, the women, and the dark folk, do they?
Woody,
We’ll there’s that, sure.
To quote an unbelievably obscure song, “Girl from Pluto” by Reggie Knighton, where the contented narrator sings:
“She could have saved the human race, but instead she settled down with me.”
I hope Tipper will encourage her man to do the former.
VL: "they don’t lie awake dreaming of ways to kick the poor..."
That’s POSSIBLY true, though their commitment to the wonders of Globalization, Neo-Lib economics, and their clear affinity for CorpoRat hegemony suggests they PROBABLY don’t lie awake nights trying to figure out how to HELP those people, or ways to restore the Constitution, or to heal the wall between State and Church, either.
btw, i liked your reply to “perky” on DU. I’m 86’d there since like 2004, so i couldn’t endorse you post, though I wanted to.
A Quick Study, But A Slow Learner
Faith in...
what, exactly? Faith that the words written by Semitic Temple Priests during the Bronze Age, and the Part II: New and Improved words agreed upon by vote at Nicaea have some fairy dust in them? Ever wonder why, when people are praying in public, they shut their eyes? It’s so the facts don’t get in the way.

Note to vl re Tipper: After his galactic epiphany beneath the Bodhi Tree, Gautama Buddha had a choice between nirvana and coming back to teach the world what he had learned. Jesus had to be sacrificed to satisfy the requirements of a particularly sadistic contract, but Buddha was under no such obligation.
That being asserted, I will vote for Clinton over any Republican candidate. I would vote for Gore above all other candidates. More Buddha, please.
++++
But will Life rise up to protect the Buddha?
Because if an honest person runs for president, and gets elected, you can be sure that person will soon be invited onwards by the military-industrial-contractor complex.
Although we will be told the deliverer of the invitation is a lone gunman.
Again.

The way it works is, a national leader gets elected with great public support.
S/he assumes office.
Within a week or so, somebody shows up with great letters of recommendation to advise said leader.
the conversation goes like this: “I can make you and your family incredibly rich. Just do as you are told.”
unspoken, but known to everybody in the room is the knowledge of what happens to people who don’t take the money. Folks like Torrijos, Arbenz, Allende: They don’t have to tell you.
Something of the same sort happens to everyone who aspires to prominent national office in this country, too.
A Quick Study, But A Slow Learner
Oh, ye of little...uh, faith!
Edwards is doing just fine. Buck up.
If Hillary and Obama
You do know that the burden of proof stands with the accuser not the accused?
Well unless its a republican doing the accusing.
Wow, it's cool when old posts pop up
October being a long time ago from here in December.
Whatever happened to Woody, dammit? People are starting to wonder. I don’t remember any major dustups but haven’t seen him around in weeks.
Zee, I like your post most of all. It holds up the best over time. Edwards is getting ridiculous stories written about him today, which tells me that The Powers That Be are getting worried about him again.
This is oddly not what I expected. Hillary gets bashed on a regular NYT schedule, about every week and a half; Obama gets a sort of praising-with-faint-damns story on about the same schedule, but mostly they want to keep the horserace coverage between the two of them.
I really expected a rah-rah-Edwards push around now to balance out the pro-McCain campaign that has popped up like a midwinter mushroom as Guiliani and Romney have been sinking like stones.
Edwards still seems to be the one they fear the most. Heh heh heh. :)

hillary supported DOMA, the
hillary supported DOMA, the law barring gay marriage, and now only supports a partial repeal. while obama wants to get rid of the law altogether. obama wants states to recognize other states’ laws who allow gay marriage. this is hardly the scary picture of a christian ideologue you are trying to paint of him.
from chicago tribune 2004:
Obama said he would not let his religious beliefs dictate the way he approaches public policy. He said he would supports civil unions between gay and lesbian couples, as well as letting individual states determine if marriage between gay and lesbian couples should be legalized.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/print…
have you heard about
have you heard about hillary’s prayer group?
Through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as the Fellowship. Her collaborations with right-wingers such as Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) and former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) grow in part from that connection.
http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/…
i worry more about somebody being secretive about their conservative christian ties.
Y'all can cry about this later: Hillary is NOT a progressive Dem
she was a Young Republican in her college days.
she remains a conservative.
she remains committed to ideals that don’t advance the cause of the poor in this country — and the poor in this country is the fastest-growing demographic, regardless of religion, age, or gender.
What Atrios refers to — the mounds of sewage being flushed about between enormous financial confidence enterprises around the globe now — is eating away at the value of homes, farms, and even commercial real estate.
The “bubble” hasn’t just burst, folks. It’s exploding, like a septic tank gone systemic and rupturing to the gaseous bellow of a spewing interaction between rotary wings and fecal material.
Credit checks are available at the ER now, to see whether you can be counted on to pay your bill in a timely manner in order to determine how quickly you need to be treated.
Not only can your “health care coverage provider” now override your doctor on matters of prescriptions and procedures — anybody heard about the California girl, Nataline Sarkisyan, denied a life-saving (and proven) transplant because her insurance considered it an “experimental” procedure? — but soon whether you’re behind on your student loan payments will figure as much into how you’re treated post-traumatic-event as will your injuries’ severity, extent, and the availability of qualified treatment specialists.
Just imagine. We’re headed for a new Gilded Age.
Gilt, by the way, is not really gold.
