WASHINGTON – A U.S. official says Osama bin Laden has been buried at sea.

After bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. forces in Pakistan, senior administration officials said the body would be handled according to Islamic practice and tradition. That practice calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours, the official said. Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult, the official said. So the U.S. decided to bury him at sea.

The official, who spoke Monday on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive national security matters, did not immediately say where that occurred.

Well, look. I can't imagine why that would give rise to any questions. I mean, why would it?

But how are we going to drag the body through the streets, if it's floating in the Indian Ocean somewhere? Can't anybody here play this game?

NOTE On the bright side, this does explain why the corpse wasn't a festive centerpiece at the White House Correspondents Dinner. I'd been wondering about that.

The man is a criminal mass murderer who was killed while violently resisting capture. There should have been a post-mortem. That’s how any other criminal killed during capture would have been treated, regardless of religion. Why is he special?

I must be turning into a conspiracy theorist nutjob, because this is all too convenient. Out of the blue, we are told that Bin Laden is dead, ok. Covert ops with Navy Seals, big shootout at hideout, yep. But his body buried at sea? 24 hours within death? to HONOR him and his islamis beliefs? THAT is where I draw the line. The american people deserved better.

and someone replies:

Read the Muslim Rules on burial: "It is obligitory to bury a dead body in the ground...".
Burial at sea is only permitted if the person dies at sea and there is no possible way to bury them in the ground before the body decays. It is clearly laid out in their burial rules.
This entire scenario is a fraud.

The public is getting less gullible.

I would like to believe he is dead.

However there is no convincing evidence without the body... nor will there ever be.

I've had a bit of fun stirring the centrist blog pot here in Arkansas.... decrying this sea burial and asking for credible evidence. They have all but called me a bigot... definitely called me a birther, which they know was never true.

The whole sea burial smells like - wag the dog to me.

asked how do we know they really got Obama, etc. We both laughed about the "burial at sea," a young guy said they had to do that so there would be no memorials or shrines set up for him.

I mentioned secret burial with no headstone -- and also that Christians did quite well with shrines without a body....

Everyone laughed. Then the clerk said, "Why didn't they just hold on to it a bit longer to show proof? Then she said it takes how long for we mere mortals to do DNA analysis and they did in on Obama in less than a day?

Interesting -- these were not weirdo people, just regular folks and wondering about the details of this.
