Wars Are Depressing, Even "The Good Ones," Ending Them Is Too, Even Bad Ones

Departments:

CD is depressed, as she tells us here.

Not angry, and not contemptuous, although I'm sure there are elements of both emotions interwoven in her remarks about the specific manner in which liberals, progressives, and Democrats are being forced to try and end Bush's excellent Iraq adventure.

This strikes me as an entirely appropriate response to an entirely messy enterprise. Read below the fold...

Awaiting the Edwards' Newsconference

I'm sure you all know the Edwards will be having a joint new conference, called for noon, EST, and that whatever the announcement is to be, it follows on Elizabeth's visit to her doctor, and that given the fact of her discovery that she had breast cancer soon after the 2004 election, that fears there has been a reoccurance are natural, as are speculations that Edwards may be withdrawing from the Presidential race. Channelling Molly, Pt. 1: An Unbowed Feminist Confronts Popular Idiocy - Camille Who?

Molly Ivins 1

Please note the second installment is up of MJS's photo essay on Sunday's protest march in Hollywood; don't miss it, or the first, and the comment thread it elicited. Molly would have approved; Molly would have been at one of them. Read below the fold...

CD: You know I love you, but what are you thinking?

I am referring to your formulation about Darrell Issa in your post of yesterday, to wit, that it takes a Republican to tell the truth about Bush corruption, i.e., to use the word "lie."

Are you seriously proposing that Democrats have lagged behind the GOP, or even any individual Republican congress persons, in pursuing what the firings of those eight US Attorneys is all about?

Probably not. Read below the fold...

Our Hearts Are Breaking: Molly Ivins Is Seriously Ill

Molly Ivens

Most of you probably know that Molly Ivins has been battling breast cancer for years now. Some months ago, I noticed that Molly, in an appearance on C-SPAN, was wearing a cap, the kind of cap one might wear if one's hair had fallen out from something like radiation therapy. Read below the fold...

Pundit Pap; ABC This Week With Young Mr. All-Things-To-All-People

Oh wait, wasn’t that supposed to be the rap on Bill Clinton? George Stephanopoulos was supposed to be the true liberal believer, the progressive conscience of the administration, the last honest kid, or so he conjured himself in his book about his Clinton years. Read below the fold...

Pundit Pap: Fox News Sunday: Brownback, Lieberman, Is There A Difference?

Short answer, yes: On Iraq, Brownback makes more sense than Lieberman. Longer answer, maybe no difference, when it comes to voting for a Republican or a Democrat in 2008.

But the real headline from this Sunday’s foxy witches brew of a rightwing stew, minus eye of Newt today, but just as noxious, probably should be this: William Kristol single-handedly redefines constitutional duties of U.S. Congress. Read below the fold...

Sunday Gasbaggery: Pundit Pap At Fox News Sunday, Hillary, oh, and Iraq

A personal note: some of you may have noticed a certain paucity of posting on my part in the last six months. Yes, life does intrude on blogging, but most of my difficulties have been the result of a spectacular run of bad luck getting computers to work for me. Most of this is my fault; I can't get used to the idea that something as relatively expensive as a computer is considered old and in need of replacement after only three or four years. Sunday Gasbaggery: This Week, Like Every Other Week

I have been without access to a working computer for much of the last month, so it was a shock, getting back to the lethal emptiness of our political discourse as represented by the utter and complete pap spewed by our Sunday gasbags. Read below the fold...

Senator Johnson Responsive; Harry Reid Plays It Just Right

The New York Times confirms it: Senator Tim Johnson is responsive to touch, to the sound of his wife's voice, and he has been able to respond cogently to suggested actions, like taking his wife's hand. Read below the fold...

Latest Update: Senator Johnson In Critical but Stable Condition After Surgery

UPDATE: NPR reported on Thursday's "All Things Considered" that Tim Johnson is responding to touch and to spoken language, appropriately. That doesn't tell us a whole lot, but I close friend of mine suffered a huge intracranial bleed when she was only 41, and she was in a comma for several weeks before she even woke up.

In comments, Tinfoil Hat Boy reminds me that as long as Senator Johnson is still alive, his absence in January will not in any way jeopardize the Democrats being in control of the Senate, since even without him they have 50 votes to the Republicans 49.

Sunday Gasbaggery: Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace: The Has-Been Edition

has been 2

Update: Edited for clarity, and misatkes, and please note, it was Juan Williams, not Juan Cole, who "represented" liberalism on yesterdays All-Star panel.

Let me begin by clarifying the title of this post; it is not aimed at John Kerry, who, according to the SCLM was a has-been before he was a wanna-be and ultimately successful contender for the Democratic 2004 Presidential candidacy. Read below the fold...
