Bloggers Who Aren't Black

Well, I was willing to only make a couple of comments about it, but it seems other folks are motivated to make this an issue, so I might as well join in. Steve and Liza and Pam and T and folks at the Crack Den have all chimed in about it, and I have to say that I’m on the list of the deeply disappointed. It’s just not that hard to find bloggers of color. The excuses I’m reading just don't hold much water.

I’ll make this point: while it may be the case that 1) politicians care first and most about money and 2) high traffic bloggers with a track record of raising money are the logical choice for politicians to meet with, it’s also the case that without the minority vote, the Democratic party is dead in the water at the national level, and in many local races as well. Without the minority vote, specifically the black vote, Dems lose. Period.

As Pam and others have noted, a picture is worth a thousand words. Worse, with the internets, pictures last forever. This is a macaca moment for the left, and a lot of us aren’t going to forget it. I know exactly how important my community is to the Daous of the blogosphere now, thanks for the reminder.

Bloggers make a lot of claims about being more progressive and more in touch with the issues real people have in mind. They are clamoring for spots at the strategy table, and demanding their input be taken seriously. Folks who want to play hardball political games need to remember that image is everything in our benighted political culture. This is an example of how many bloggers still have a long way to go before they’re ready for the big league.

Update: The Grey One reminds us that you can't see tits on the Internets.
