Book Review: The Public Health Nurse

I'm going to invite you all to read a book, and then let's talk about it here next Sunday. It's called "The Public Health Nurse." It's a journey back to what our future may be if we don't get single-payer now.

You don't have to buy the book!

It's a Google book, scanned in. For people like me who love old magazines and journals, it's a fascinating read. And deja vu all over again.

Any portions in particular to recommend?

if for nothing more than the tales of how patients

came to need the nurses, the first article is priceless, lambert.

Types of nursing

The primary focus of public health nursing is improving the health of the community as a whole rather than just that of an individual or family. Public health nursing is sometimes called a type of community health nursing. Some experts use the terms "public health nursing" and "community health nursing" interchangeably.

In most provinces in Canada, legislated Nurse Practitioners are able to diagnose and manage many disorders and chronic diseases, prescribe medications for you, order diagnostics, and refer you to specialists if needed. They are able to do complete physicals, and medicals required for most third party companies, and care for you during your pregnancy and after you deliver. They see many clients with chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, osteoarthritis, and mental health concerns. They also see patients when they are acutely ill such as in Emergency Departments or in Critical Care units. In primary care settings, Nurse Practitioners are able to see you the same day if you have an earache, sore throat, or other condition that is keeping your from work or school. Some Nurse Practitioners are also able to perform minor surgical procedures.

As it stands today (2009), nearly all provinces and territories (in Canada) have legislation that allows Nurse Practitioners to practice to their full scope. Source

I regularly visit a nurse practioner instead of a physician. Although there was much resistance from physicians at first, nurse practioners have become well established in the Canadian healthcare system.

Adrena, please take a look at the copyright date on the book

and remember that for many folks visited by the Blue Nurses, the nurse (as is today's NP) was *the* medical provider available.
