From Time. (Abramoff is circled in red.) I'm going to wait for Wampum to deconstruct this one, since the person shaking hands with Bush is a tribal leader. (I thought the photo showed a case of the pigeon drop, until I read that Garza was under indictment for embezzling $300,000 from his tribe. Maybe it's three thieves trying to scam somebody not in the picture.)
Let's leave this with Cooper's reporting about words from a witness to the photo:
This meeting, however, was a relatively small gathering attended by some two dozen people ...
Benigno Fitial, the governor of the Northern Mariana Islands, told TIME he attended the 2001 meeting as well.
Fitial recalled that Bush was "very gracious" at the session. "He knew quite a few of the people in the room; I know that because He called them by their first name. The responses showed that Bush was no stranger to these people, he said. "And the response was very warm on both sides."
"Warm" like a fresh, steaming load.
Why wouldn't Bush be friendly to Abramoff? Abramoff was a Bush pioneer, after all. Man raises $100,000 for you, and you can't remember his name? I don't think so.
NOTE Wampum also has the real story on Abramoff and the Indian tribes. I've summarized it here, but go read the original too.
