They tell me goat meat is really very tasty...via AP:
Cargill Inc. said Saturday it is recalling more than 1 million pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria, the second time in less than a month it has voluntarily recalled beef that may have been tainted.
No illnesses have been reported, said John Keating, president of Cargill Regional Beef.
The agribusiness giant produced the beef between Oct. 8 and Oct. 11 at a plant in Wyalusing, Pa. and distributed it to retailers across the country. They include Giant, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Wegmans and Weis.
Cargill learned the meat may be contaminated after the Agriculture Department found a problem with a sample of the beef produced on Oct. 8, the company said. The bacteria is E. coli O157:H7.
A spokeswoman for Cargill said 10 states are included in the recall — Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
This is the Very Very Bad e. coli, so don't take a chance on this one. If you buy ground beef at the stores listed, best take it back. And give a bleach scrub to any refrigerator shelves or countertops that it came in contact with. You've been promising to clean out the fridge anyway, right?

More on Cargill
At the end of the article:
"Financial commodties trading business"? Huh?
Interesting! There's an oligopoly watch site. And I had no idea that Cargill was into "hedge products". Not that I'm foily.

There is no such thing as
There is no such thing as sterile food, not unless you irradiate it (and maybe not even then). OTOH, e-coli is killed if the meat is properly handled and cooked, which I know how to do. Too bad I'm not in a position to take advantage of all those sales on ground beef that this e-coli hysteria is causing right now. :-(
If you really want to worry about a food-borne pathogen in your groceries, consider mad cow disease because no amount of care in the kitchen can fix that.
E coli is a danger in undercooked foods. Other recalls
that have come out -- such as the Castleberry recall for botulinum toxin in the canned beef stew, chili and hot dog sauce -- are similar to CJD because cooking doesn't completely eliminate the danger.

Actually, there is ONE "sterile" food: honey.
It never 'spoils'...
