Catholic tastes

Hillary is pro-choice and yet remains popular with Catholics. Sounds like a liability on the ticket, doncha think?

Senator Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, lost the Catholic vote badly to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, who, like Mr. Obama, is a supporter of abortion rights, during the primaries in states like New Hampshire, Missouri and Ohio. In Pennsylvania, Catholic voters preferred Mrs. Clinton to Mr. Obama by a 40-point margin.

Simple answers to simple questions

Herb asks, or exclaims:

Does NO ONE READ BOB SOMERSBY!!!!!!!!!

No.

But who's not doing the reading? VL, or the stenographer that VL cites?

Herb, thanks for catching the BS "Casey banned" meme

I've edited down the citation to focus on Hillary's popularity with Catholics.

Oh, and I do read Somerby (no second "s") often

But I didn't catch yesterday's or the older posts about Casey/Clinton.

Vastleft, I'm not sure I understand your post. If

Hillary is prochoice AND is popular with Catholics, how would she be a liability on a presidential ticket? Wouldn't that be an asset?

I love this job!

It's called irony

You'll find a lot of it about here.

Roe v (Poverty, equal opportunity, war, ... )

Here's an interesting game. Take two bibles and remove from one every reference to abortion. Take the other and remove every reference to poverty/justice. (I first read Jim Wallis use that story, but don't know if that's where it originated.)

One thing that the Clintons understand is that you can't really pander to religious folks. Either you're with them on the issues or not. If you're not, that doesn't mean you can't get their votes. But if you try to cast doubt on your position, it weakens your credibility as a whole. Having it both ways is worse, over all, than sticking to your position.

The other thing you'll hear from religious people regarding the Clintons is that, no the didn't try to end Roe v Wade, but the number of abortions went down. For a while, Bill Clinton obliterated the "you need to end Roe" to stop abortions line. Successive Dems--Obama probably the worst--have set that position back a long way.

Only tyrants rig elections.

I blame the stenographers!

The two things are inter-related however and I wouldn't remove the "Casey Banned". Misunderstanding actual history is an integral part of why the "bad with catholics" analysis is bullshit.

If you see what I'm saying.....

Bad facts lead to bad decisions. MSNBC traffics in deliberately bad facts to make up "incongrueties" where there ARE NONE.

And, of course, they were pretty stingy...

... with pointing out many of the incongruities in the Democratic primaries. In fact, their fingerprints were all over a lot of them.

Somerby, yes

Oops a typo.

What galls me is there must be some way that we can get stenographers (oh wait, "Professional Journalists") from ceasing to print proven falsehoods. Falsehoods which have been proven false time and time again. Is there some way to do that? Is there someone we can send a letter to maybe that opens with:

"Dear Insufferable Moron;

Do you know how to use Lexis-Nexis? Google? How to read the english language?...."

Dear John M. Broder

and your fact-checker at the New York Times;

Do you know how to use LexisNexis? Google? Wikipedia? How to read the English Language?

I included the links in case you hadn't heard of those "online" reference tools. On that wikipedia link you can use the DOWN arrow on your keyboard to get to where (if you know how to read the English Language) you will find three citations behind a sentence that reads:

"In fact, Casey was denied a speaking slot because he had refused to endorse the Clinton-Gore ticket.

Those citations are:
- Peter J Boyer (November 14, 2005). "The Right to Choose". The New Yorker.
- Michael Crowley, "Casey Closed," The New Republic, September 16, 1996.
- Bob Somersby, "The Daily Howler", April 2, 2008.

You might want to check those out and then re-thunk yer opening paragraph and then everything that follows.

Don't gotta, but.......

Sincerely,

Your pal Herb the Verb

Having Survived 12 Years of Catholic School ...

I've often wondered why Hillary did so much better than Obama with Catholics. I haven't seen anyone enlarge on it, so I have no linky goodness on the matter. I also wonder whether the 'fallen away' variety as opposed to regular Mass attendees are more likely to go for one over the other. I have my own theories:

- the emphasis on good works over faithing/hoping puts Catholics off of Obama, who is by definition, all about faithing/hoping
- the revival tent atmosphere of the OFB makes us naturally skeptical, as we've been indocrinated that anything coming out of a revival tent usually smells of expensive snake oil

Or, it could be that we're all a bunch of bitter racists.

Interesting theories, HGM

Nice to "meet" you!

Thanks

I've been lurking the mighty building for a spell and meaning to de-lurk, but don't get much face time on the 'puter away from work. I hope it's not considered rude to pop up from time to time from the high desert. BTW, I think this place is one of the sanest, smartest places I've seen in the blogular wreckage of the primaries. My compliments to everyone who contributes to making this place what it is.

It's funny, a lot of people worry that lurking or...

... commenting only rarely is bad form.

It's great to have readers, and if/when you're moved to comment, that's extra-great. It's all good great.
