Celebrating Title IX: 40th anniversary today

Awesome women!

Awesome women!

Back story: Where I live there are few radio options, thematically at least. Christian Apocalyptic Radio, Right Wing Hate Radio, and NPR. I mean for talk and news, not music. I finally gave up on NPR. Any questions about that decision?

I finally turned to Sports Talk Radio, and haven't looked back. That's how I learned that today, June 23, is the 40th anniversary of Title IX. From wiki:

~It states (in part) that

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance...

While Title IX is best known for its impact on high school and collegiate athletics, the original statute made no explicit mention of sports.

So, today on ESPN radio, the male hosts were absolutely falling all over themselves because their guest was Sheryl Swoopes. What a moment. From wiki:

She was the first player to be signed in the WNBA when it was created. She has won three Olympic Gold Medals and is a three-time WNBA MVP.

p.s. both wikis are worth a read.

I searched around for some classic footage of her games, but no luck. I stumbled onto the WNBA site, and found the youtube I embedded above of recent great plays. Awesome women!

p.s. both wikis are worth a read.

And, on that note, hello Sisters! (uh, men may comment also, should they wish)

ah, the 1970s, when richard nixon gave us the title ix, the epa, and 3.5% unemployment, and girls thought they had the chance to grow up to become full-fledged human beings...
