Charlie Rangel: I'm still standing

Still seeking to answer the question "Who's going after Charlie Rangel," I found this Washington Post article whose coverage agrees well with most of my carefully-assembled timeline. Glad to see someone's on the story, even if I think they stop before asking the most important question.

From the article (and to fill in those who haven't been following the story):

Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.), 78, addressing two visitors in his office near the House chamber, says he won't cave in to Republicans and other critics who demand that he step aside as chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee until the ethics cloud surrounding him clears.

"When they call you everything and just repeat every week, every day, accusations, it's discomfortable," Rangel said last week in an interview, in between trips to the House chamber for speeches and votes. "But, hey, I'm not in a nursing home hearing that. I'm on the job, trying to deal with disaster and tax extensions and energy and peace and trying to get the hell out of this fiscal crisis that our country finds itself in."

Rangel's perch at the top has been threatened by a series of disclosures about his finances, real estate dealings and use of official resources for personal ends.

The congressman denies doing anything "morally wrong" and has sought exoneration from the House ethics committee, a bipartisan panel with a reputation for giving little more than wrist slaps in recent years. The flap has embarrassed some Democrats, emboldened GOP opponents and generated calls for Rangel to relinquish the chairmanship from hometown newspapers, the New York Times and the New York Post.

In the interview on Wednesday, the day the ethics panel opened its investigation of Rangel's activities, the congressman blamed "irresponsible" reporters and opportunistic Republicans for most of his troubles.

In his gravelly voice, he said the tumult will pass. At worst, he said, he could be accused of sloppy record-keeping.

"No one would ever be able to say that it's a scandal or that I was corrupt," Rangel said. "They may not be able to remove this from my stainless reputation over 50 years. But they will be able to say that 'Rangel never intentionally violated the spirit of the law, or evaded or avoided federal taxes, or attempted to mislead the ethics committee.' "

In power circles in New York and Washington, support for Rangel appears steady. A source close to the House leadership said that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) backs the congressman, and that he is not in danger of losing his chairmanship. At the annual African American Day Parade in Harlem last Sunday, Rangel was greeted by chants of "Charlie! Charlie! Charlie!" said former New York mayor David N. Dinkins, who rode beside him in a convertible.

Do check out the article for its useful summary of events, including a mention of Rangel's role as a supporter of HRC in the primaries.

I still have found nothing to indicate who or what triggered all of these stories and why, at this particular moment. Which leads to conspiracy theories if one is not careful.

[I often find it useful, when wondering why someone is behaving in a puzzling way, to ask what the consequences of their behavior are: frequently that gives a clue. In this case, a very real consequence is that Rangel has not been able to be his usual outspoken self, as that would just mean giving an opening to drag out the charges in the press again, a distraction from more important things going on. And in my more tinfoil-hatty moments I wonder if that isn't the point of it all.]

I do agree with the assessment of Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute,

"Clearly, he has some explaining to do, and it's clearly an enormous embarrassment," Ornstein said. "But these are pretty trivial things unless there is something more."

I'm still looking into the "Who's going after him" question and will post anything I find that seems reasonably reliable. If I find anything.

And now, back to the bailout...

is Rangle chair of armed services?

I am too lazy to look, but wonder if it isn't something connected to that

Nope: Ways & Means.

Arguably, the most powerful position in the House.

Also - One thing left out of the WaPo timeline was this: Rangel was snubbed (the word usually used to describe it) by not being given a speaking slot at the DNC; see, for instance, Talkleft [by BTD, a Rangelphile].

Don't know how or if it signifies, though.

We can't afford not to have single-payer!

I don't know about Chairman Rangel but I'm at the end of my rope

Here's a NY Times editorial about this from the 14th.

His latest admission is that as chief of Congress’s tax-writing committee, he was “irresponsible” in failing to disclose $75,000 in rental income and pay federal and state taxes on a villa in the Dominican Republic. ...

Mr. Rangel has hurt his case with clumsy, combative pleas of ignorance of the facts and law involving his Dominican villa. “We do make errors, even though we consider ourselves experts in terms of tax policy for the nation,” said the lawmaker, who has three decades’ experience on Ways and Means.

His excuse of “cultural and language barriers” with Dominican officials was, simply, offensive. “Every time I thought I was getting somewhere, they’d start speaking Spanish,” complained Mr. Rangel.

At the least, the disclosures betray that gross sense of entitlement that regularly befalls politicians.

Now I don't know the ins and outs about why he is vulnerable these days but I don't have a lot of sympathy for him. I mean, cheese and rice, can't these guys pay their taxes?

how is this whole bailout thing helped or hurt by his absence?

that's what's key for me--he's not visible in any of this--nor is he ever mentioned as being part of any of the various groups working on this--and he's supposed to be.

he was conveniently made invisible and tarnished just when this is about to be sprung on Congress?

I'm sure he would have been a force not cooperating with Pelosi at all.

he was at meeeting yesterday

accourding to Jake Tapper. But he's laying real low, for sure.

I want to be clear about where I stand on these investigations. What's come out so far is embarassing penny-ante BS - I wish he hadn't done it (assuming the charges are borne out) but it doesn't give me reason to want him out of the Chair of Ways & Means, not by a long shot.

And all of Rangel's years of service to his constituents, and his active role (prior to this) as an outspoken liberal voice in Congress, get him a lot of slack from me.

The thing to look at here, not to be distracted from, is amberglow's question and what lies behind it. Who is going after him, and why now? This digging through trashcans and closets approach seems to me right out of the Republican playbook. (Hence my thread tag.)

Personally, I don't expect my elected officials to be squeaky-clean, and I fully expect them to act like politicians. I just ask that they do stuff for me on a fairly regular basis. And Rangel has done that and more. There's a reason for his popularity in his district, and it really is popularity, not just the inertia that re-elects incumbents a lot of the time.

[And with that, I really do need to get back to RL now...]

Ways and Means, *and* a veteran who's proposed a draft

more than once. I betcha it's clearing Congress of any black politician who could have more status and authority than Obama, with Republicans pitching in because, hey, it's a powerful Dem who can be neutralized, and other Dems are *helping*.

Such as stupid fuck Mark Udall, who walked into a fist during his debate with Schaeffer today:

Like how hard is it to say, I await the results of the ongoing investigation, and leave it at that? Sheesh.

Udall

Yep, they are going to start getting louder, too, I think.
