Fatalistic or Realistic?
Though, I say I'm a realist, I have an underlying optimisim condition, and simply don't see us as having passed the point of no return. I'm not sure that there is even such a point to begin with. Call it naivety if you'd like, but as long as the physical Constitution exists and doesn't mysteriously vanish, I think we're always capable of reclaiming the Republic no matter how far we stray. That's not to give us false hope. At some point, we may stray so far away that we forget altogether that this country is ours, but I do believe in the possibility of restoration.
But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
I wish I had your optimism.
Reading the replies to this article in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune (which Greenwald links in his Aug 31 entry) doesn't exactly encourage me.
I understand it's a self-selected sample, but the sheer volume of those willing to dismiss their rights (and those of fellow Americans) is appalling. It doesn't argue, to me, for anything approaching restoration. It only convinces me further that we've already passed the point of no return.
A 2007 survey by the First Amendment Center shows how far down the wrong road we've already gone.
inna, would you mind including
a bit more in posts like these? thanks. i've already got five browser windows going and if the conclusion is that great, you could easily cut and paste it here. chris is our friend and even comments here sometimes, he won't mind a lil link love/fair use from us.
