Clinton advisors: No formal suspension, speak out on the issues

[Avarosis, Bless His Heart, got this right away. This is not a campaign concession. UPDATE: In fact, it's not even a concession on the delegate count. Haw. The opera ain't over 'til the lady in the pantsuit says it is. Watch for the mindfuck, kidz.]

AP, assuming [silly me] they're not lying:

Hillary Rodham Clinton will concede Tuesday night that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, campaign officials said, effectively ending her bid to be the nation's first female president.

The former first lady will stop short of formally suspending or ending her race in her speech in New York City. She will pledge to continue to speak out on issues like health care. But for all intents and purposes, the two senior officials said, the campaign is over.

It would have been better to wait 'til today's primaries were over, n'est c'est pas?*

And that Unity Pony? Still seems to be on back order. What the Obama campaign can do, if they want to earn my vote, is listen to Hillary and policy, particularly universal health care policy, and adjust in some sort of accountable way.

Prediction: They won't do that, because they don't want me to be party of their party.

And now, I think I'll go plant some tomatoes.

UPDATE * As Jeralyn says:

So now the AP is falling for a story the only effect of which would be voter suppression in two states? How do these things happen?

They happen when our famously free press chooses our President, that's how.

Story updated w/ denial

WNYC is reporting that the Clinton campaign is denying this story and that Clinton will NOT concede the campaign this evening.

ZMOG, the press got it wrong?

My illusions are shattered. I'll write this in my diary tonight.

But when I read the story, "concede" (admit) the delegate count isn't the same as "concede the primary" and if she doesn't formally suspend, then the campaign is still on. Good. The whole thing has turned into a justice thing for me, now.

And see UPDATE above. Not even a concession on the delegate count. Who wrote the AP story? Nedra Pickler? [Nope: Beth Fouhy.]

She's been covering Hillary for 2 years. You think she would have cultivated better contacts.

I Hope This Is Exactly What She Does

Good politics since it's probably enough to make her seem as not being "divisive" particularly since the press wants her out so badly it will be reported as a concession even though it isn't. Second, it keeps her in the game and waiting to see what the summer brings.

Extra Bonus it puts pressure on Obama to move left on domestic issues as he's going to want to move right even more for the GE.

If This Suppresses Any Vote

I tend to think it will be Obama's. Clinton's voters have been told for months now that this is over, they show up anyway. They have reason to, if only to cast a protest vote. If Clinton is going to "concede" then Obama's voters have no reason to show up. So while they may be trying to suppress Clinton's vote, that may not actually be the effect.

What myiq2xu said.

I wonder who's controlling the message right now? Obama? Or is it Dean & Co.? Whoever it is, it must be difficult to take yourself seriously when you have to work this hard at generating headlines implying the Clinton camp's demise. It's like a creative writing course, because it certainly ain't reality. With all the "Clinton goes back home to NY, winds down campaign, calls in Amex bills, collects parking passes, cancels subscription to Presidential Weekly.." I'm dizzy from searching for the exit but then sitting back down.

I love this job!

I love this job!

Just a few minutes ago...

Fox News had a BREAKING ALERT in which Clinton is said to have offered to be Obama's VP. Who was breaking this earth-shattering information? Why, it is the AP of course. Maybe they're not tired of tempting fate today...

Something is different, it seems

I've noticed a slight change in the wording of the AP article online about Obama clinching the nomination.

The original article stated:"Campaigning on an insistent call for change, Obama outlasted former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in a historic race that sparked record turnout in primary after primary, yet exposed deep racial divisions within the party."

The revised article is more "fair and balanced": "The 46-year-old Obama outlasted Clinton in a historic campaign that sparked record turnouts in primary after primary, yet exposed deep racial and gender divisions within the party."

They added gender as a division within the party. Huh, I guess there are editors at the AP after all.

In a perfect world, it'd be great to have all the votes cast as they were earned, but that would not be in the best interest of the Democratic party. - DNC supporter after the 2008 roll call

Yeesh, I woke up logged on

Yeesh, I woke up logged on and turned to my local news channel and the headline is all about Clinton quitting and shows a (stock?) photo of Obama crushing her hand in a 'friendly' handshake.

Then reading the fine print... the AP did an unofficial polling of SDs and thinks that Obama now has enough. Nothing from either campaign about it and nothing about the primaries today. And they say that Clinton said she'd take the VP nod.

Huh? So I logged on here to get the true scoop. I feel a wee bit better, now. Should have known it was just the press and its masters screwing again with the primary process.

And no, I don't trust APs count. I know that SDs can change sides right up until the vote!

i bet she wins SD

--and they ignore it.

Quote of the speech

Killer line (oopsie!) Fabulous line:

"I started working on healthcare 16 years ago, not sixteen months."

She wants your comments at hillaryclinton.com.; she wants to know what you think she should do.

Myself, I think she should reach out to Obama and formally offer him the VP job. Considering how well he's done in this campaign, it is the decent thing to do.

that was great--

she really would be a better candidate for the general--there's no question.

I'm with you, BIO--make him the VP--to season him some more.

its hysterical--

Olbermann went on about how it was in a basement, with no tvs or cellphone service--on purpose.

time lag on Obama's speech--

it's like Speed Racer--the mouth doesn't match the sound--ah--on CNN, but not MSNBC--weird.

Obama triumph in Montana; Clinton next to last in South Dakota

Montana called for Obama.

With 89% counted, Clinton is up by 12%, 56 - 44.

MSNBC panel: Pat Buchanan asked the Question That Must Not Be Asked: "What is wrong with Barak Obama? Why can't he win the big states? Why does Clinton keep beating him? Why couldn't he put her away? How is it that McCain is running even with him? There's something wrong with Obama - what is it?"

Nobody else wanted to talk about that, could harsh the mellow, spoil the moment of triumph, but still. A question that does deserve some consideration.

MSNBC analysis of the Electoral College, synopsis: McCain has 200 solid votes and a clear path to 270. Obama has 200 solid votes but he needs to piece it together from small states to reach 270 and the path is not clear.

Well. That sounds familiar. And not good.

Don't Worry, BIO

When has a Democrat ever failed to piece together enough EVs to win a presidential election? And given all those new people Obama is bringing to the party, he won't need white women (41% of the voters in 2004), voters over 60 (24% of the vote in 2004), Latinos (8% of the vote in 2004 and growing since then), or blue collar voters (45% of the voters in 2004) to do it. He's putting together a new coalition. The Donna Brazile coalition. How could you doubt victory?

You know, if I were still a Democrat I'd be terrified about November. Fortunately for me, I'm an above-it-all independent just waiting for candidates to come and try to woo and win my vote. As an added bonus, as an independent I'll get to do something in 2012 I didn't get to do this year, decide the Democratic Party's nominee.

I Have Found It Hilarious Tonight

that apparently the Blogger Boiz and SCLM are melting down because Hillary didn't concede. They really don't know anything about politics do they?

I think Obama's the presumptive nominee and I don't think Hillary is going to overtly take it to Denver,* but anyone who knows anything about political history knows that in an election this close the loser never just goes away. It's like they thought Hillary would just say "goodbye" and walk away. She can turn the Democratic Party convention into a complete clusterfuck, the party's worst nightmare (as they've made clear repeatedly). She may not be the presumptive nominee, but she still has an enormous amount of power and will have until August. She doesn't need a damned thing from the Super Delegates or Obama or anyone else now. Obama and the Party need something from her. And, like those powerful losers before her, she's going to get pretty much whatever she wants to make her happy because whatever else happens she isn't going to release her delegates before August.

So if the Blogger Boiz and MSNBC thought that Hillary was going to fade into the woodwork, they are very wrong. Because whatever it is she wants, my guess is that it's going to be something that leaves her with some of the power she's gained. Maybe not as much power as she'd have as President, but she isn't going to go back to being just another junior senator or disappear off the face of the earth.

That this apparently has to be explained to people who comment on politics regularly, many of whom make a living at it, is one of the reasons why our culture is rotting.

What seems even more shocking, btw, is that the Obama camp doesn't seem to have realized this either. Who is going to tell the new Crown Prince that if Hillary decides he has to ask her to be his VP, he is probably going to have to ask her to be his VP (whether she wants it or just wants to be asked). Because if I had to guess, I'd bet she could peel off enough of his SDs to put her on the ticket whether he wants it or not.

* Not overtly taking it to Denver, of course, does not mean she isn't going to make damned sure she is in a position to take place over any new developments over the summer. This, of course, makes it even more important for Obama to keep her happy. He has less than an ironclad grip on the nomination and if his weak numbers start to drift south because he cannot win over Clinton's base, then he could lose what he just won.

Remember that nutcracker doll?

Maybe not going to be quite so funny for some people now.

The MSNBC were in a complete tizzy. They had themselves all worked up for her to fold and when that didn't happen, they kept trying to spin it so that she really meant that she was folding and they knew this because.... That's when they got panicked.

Tweety wasn't buying it, he said her position was a political play, but he couldn't figure out what it meant. First honest conclusion I've seen him for forever.

Good fun.

Oh, and this one, really choice: Bill announced he has been neglecting his foundation and has to get back on the job, real important stuff, not clear when he'll be free again. KO and crew tried to say this was just fine and dandy with Obama because the Big Dog is such a troublemaker. They don't even want him around for the general, and IF there is a deal for an Obama/Hillary ticket she has to promise he'll stay away.

Three things - One, Obama & Team think they can tell Bill Clinton what to do? Seriously?

Two - Does this sound like the Gore strategy? The campaign run by Donna Brazile? How'd that work out?

Three - Clinton announced he's got lots to keep him real busy. Anything the Obama's say after the fact is trying to put a spin on something outside their control.

Pretty good, this style of politics. Hardball, meet nutcracker. Crunch. Snap, crackle, pop.

The Dems Have No Balls, But They Do Have Stern Letters

Which apparently is how Nancy, Harry, and Howard are going to force all those Democrats to unify. Don't worry, BIO, I don't find this enraging, I find it hilarious. Oh, the political incompetency (via Talk Left):

In the absence of a concession speech from Sen. Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, top figures in the Democratic Party are set to go public, urging all uncommitted officials to declare their presidential affiliations.

Sources have confirmed that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and an official with the Democratic Governors Association are planning to release a public statement on Wednesday morning requesting that the party close its ranks and prepare for the race against Sen. John McCain.

It's amazing to me that Democrats have elected even two presidents in the last 40 years.

Let me see if I get this straight, Obama has enough delegates to be the presumptive nominee. He is kicking off his GE campaign tomorrow morning. (Nice timing on that statement, btw, it will let the media obsess over Hillary and ignore Obama as much of it did tonight.)

Clinton supporters are feeling raw and angry with the party, believing the primary contest has been unfairly stacked against her by party leaders and they are especially pissed after that clusterfuck on Saturday. They also think that sexism has played a part in the repeated early demands that she drop out, which are unprecedented.

So what does the Democratic Party do to address this tricky situation. They need to issue a public statement demanding Unity! Immediately! No giving Clinton a day or two or her supporters a couple of days to deal with the emotions of the past week. Nooo. That might make them feel better about the party. Can't have that. If every last SD doesn't declare immediately and kick Clinton to the curb we won't have unity! Monday will be too late!

I'm beginning to wonder if anyone understands what Unity actually means. It does not mean that you have a declared winner or a concession. Unity is having a winner the party's voters will unify around. Giving Obama more SDs to increase his margin won't get them that. In fact, it's irrelevant to that. It also makes it even more clear that Obama is not the pick of the people, he's the pick of the elite. It also makes it look like he can't unify the party on his own, he needs Nancy, Harry, and Howard to help him.

These folks can demand the SDs declare all they want (and we know who they want them to declare for since only one candidate would "unify" the party at this point). It won't get them what they want, a unified party. Because the SDs can't give them that, only the voters can.

Hillary is going to get everything she wants. That they cannot even wait until Thursday to get this over means they will do just about anything to avoid any kind of fight in August. So here's the question, what does Hillary want? Because she's going to get it.

And she may even still end up being the nominee. I've put Obama's odds at melting down over the summer at 15-20%, giving him 5% extra because the Democratic Party seems determined to do everything in its power to make it harder for him. I think that 5% might have been too generous and it should be more like 10%. It would be ironic if Hillary becomes the nominee because Obama melts down in part due to the Democratic Party elite's incompetence.

You know, I had been dreading this evening, but I have a feeling this next week or two is going to be fun.
