Somebody shake me this can’t be real.
“The reason this [program] started is to make sure the agricultural industry wouldn’t go out of business,” state Rep. Dorothy Butcher said. Her district includes Pueblo, near the farmland where the inmates will work.
Yep. It’s real.
“If they can’t get slaves from Mexico, they want them from the jails,” said Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies in Washington, which favors restrictions on immigration.

Slaves. From Mexico.
Slaves. From prisons.
Free enterprise is Freedom is Slavery, just like War is Peace, right?

"They hate us for our freedom."
Not for the other people’s slavery.
Let’s be reasonable, here.

you want to feel outraged?
Click through the photo gallery about the family prisons for people who run afoul of the Immigration Service. Read the captions. And remember most of these places are run by companies like CACI; you’re only seeing a sqeeky clean one.

piece of shit politicians
There’s a pos politician here where I live who as a member of the city council published immigrant hate via e-mail to constituants, joined by a CA federal assemblyman. I e-mailed her back that what she was doing was wrong, and the time would come when there was no one to do the dirty jobs that none of us would do. She’s very ambitious, now considering running for the CA Assembly. She loves to spout her conservative garbage (its a conservative town in So Cal). She will be all for using inmates for slave labor. I use the term “piece of shit”. It doesn’t cover how I feel. But she’s in the right place in this town; the city council has been largely made up of pieces of shit.

kellyb, thanks for the photos.
Can we please have a constitutional amendment abolishing slavery?
Why I rant
For digitally less obvious reasons, this slavery thing is a real sore spot with me. There is no reason for it other than profit. I slowly began to realize, years ago, that it really wasn’t about skin color. That was just for convenience. It’s an entire cultural orientation to the world. The idea of slavery is rooted to the same paradigm that has the environment befouled – the idea of dominion over nature and humanity that manifests axiomatically in the concept of private property. I just hope there is enough time to work it out. I hope the web remains open enough for us to work out our humanity. To discuss, share, and commune long enough to become human. I don’t say it but this is a nice place to be. I’m glad to be able to participate.

The commonality between the Christiantists and the Corporatists
They both want to own our very flesh. (To Big Pharma, for example, the flesh is a “human resource” that can be induced to consume drugs in a regular fashion. Ditto Big Food, except corn syrup, salt, and giant portions, not drugs. Ditto Big Oil….) Just like the slaveholders.
The color of that flesh is a means to the end, although to make that means really, really work, all sorts of horrific stuff needs to happen.
As CD said somewhere, “We’re all niggers now.”

Not only as consumers
As products. Each of our carcasses can be resold piecewise for a tidy profit. But that’s a different rant, ergo, off topic.
The oddball thing about slavery is that despite the preception among Authorities that there must be some sort of cheap labor for the system to work, slavery is uneconomical and is only needed for work in a system where the control is top-down. In other words, in a system where Control exists for Control’s sake.
