Reid is "Shocked and disappointed" (and oh, by the way, Obama endorses chained CPI)
Talks to avert the fiscal cliff suffered a “major setback” Sunday, Democrats said, when Republicans demanded significant cuts to Social Security benefits in exchange for President Obama’s request to extend emergency unemployment benefits and cancel deep cuts to the Pentagon and other agency budgets. ...
Reid was “shocked and disappointed” by the new GOP demand, said a Democratic aide close to the talks, who described the request as a “poison pill.” While the two sides were still talking, said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations, ”we view this as a serious setback. “ ....
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) insisted Sunday that Democrats put cuts to Social Security benefits on the table, noting that [correctly] Obama had offered to do so as part of the big deficit-reduction package he had been negotiating with House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio.)
Republicans declined to comment on the new offer, but noted that Obama endorsed the adjustment, known as chained CPI, again Sunday, in an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press.
“One of the proposals we made was something called 'Chained CPI' which sounds real technical [condescend much][/condescend], but basically makes an adjustment in terms of how inflation is calculated for Social Security,” Obama said on the show, which was taped Saturday. “Highly unpopular among Democrats, not something supported by AARP, but in pursuit of strengthening Social Security for the long-term, I’m willing to make those decisions."
So, magically, the discussion is about killing more elders and being direct about it (the Republican position) and killing fewer elders and being "thoughtful' and "nuanced" about it (the Democrat position).
What is so hard about saying:
1. Not one penny of cuts to social insurance programs
2. Any cost savings to be returned to beneficiaries as services
3. Age neutral benefit structure, so young people don't get screwed
4. Lower Social Security eligibility to 60, so young people can get some jobs
You'd think a milquetoast program like that would be possible from some Democrats -- or from Socialist firebrand Bernie Sanders. But n-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!
NOTE Oh ha ha ha.
