Get up, stand up

Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic:

“A few years ago, I would have actually said to you, you know, the person who's doing that session at the gym once a day is doing everything they need to do. But the data that are now coming up suggests that's not the case, “Levine told NBC News’ Natalie Morales in an interview airing Thursday, Jan. 10 on NBC’s Rock Center with Brian Williams. “Being sedentary for nine hours a day at the office is bad for your health whether you go home and watch television afterwards or hit the gym. It is bad whether you are morbidly obese or marathon-runner thin. It appears that what is critical and maybe even more important than going to the gym, is breaking up that sitting time.” ....Get up for 10 minutes every hour!

Eesh.... Basically, I sat down at the computer in July to do the site relaunch, and basically haven't gotten up since.

I've got to lose around thirty pounds, now. The computer is killing me!

But I always figured I could work myself back to a baseline. Now Levine is telling me I can't! Yikes!

You may not even need one. Here's an interview with Gretchen Reynolds, who wrote a book about not sitting.

After reading about it, I decided to combine her recommendation with an ADD time management technique. I bought a kitchen timer and set it for 20 minutes. When it goes off, I get up, stretch, walk around, whatever, then start the next 20 minutes. Sometimes the interval between 20-minute sessions is 2 minutes and sometimes it's 5 or even 15. I don't think that matters so much for people like us who don't have to please a boss. Concentrating for 20 minutes is about all I can manage, and now I don't have to feel bad about it, because it's exercise-related!

Plus, it avoids the obvious problem that would go with a standing desk -- how would my cat be able to sleep on my lap??
