If you have an electric water heater, a heating element can be replaced without too much expense or trouble, even if you get someone else to do it (it takes a really big wrench or socket). You might not need a whole new water heater.

It's an old propane heater that reached the end of the line a little before I had the chance to replace it.

I'm going to replace it with an electric, just because the heater is cheaper. I know that's bad of me.

If you don't use a lot of hot water, you might consider a tankless water heater. They're more energy efficient that tank models and produce hot water only on demand. Also, the technology has improved since they were first introduced.

There are quite a few models under $200. Some are electric (both 120V and 240V) and some propane models, too.

Just a thought for your consideration.

... and also with a tank I can leverage the boiler; some fancy name, but in essence I can heat the shower water in the morning when the boiler heat the house up.

That's a whole different kettle of fish.

Living in the south most of my life, I didn't even make the connection to your heating system.

At this time of year, I spend most of my time thinking about my heating system!
