Yes, deck chairs on the fucking Titanic. The excellent Bob Fertik at Big Orange:
CONYERS: But the question of how we orchestrate moving a congressional schedule forward of accomplishments ** — we’re pretty proud of what we’ve done in eight months after having no control over the agenda for twelve years. We also are trying to make sure that we don’t bring resolutions or hearings that would put the election in jeopardy. We could close down the Congress — I have been in more impeachment hearings than anybody in the House or the Senate. And our legislative attempts to reverse so many things would come to a stop.
[Oopsie. There goes another monitor. Let me take another moment to go bandage my fist… There.]
There’s a very simple AA principle that covers all this:
First things first
Maybe Conyers can explain how to restore the rule of law by passing legislation? Maybe Conyers can explain how, when the Constitution has been destroyed, passing laws is anything other than an empty game?
It’s like the fucking Beltway Dems are blithely putting in new kitchen appliances and painting the walls in fresh colors, while all the while the termites are eating away at the foundations and the furnace is about to blow.
And Conyers is one of the good ones. Jesus.
NOTE ** [Dammit, another monitor. Excuse me. “Accomplishments like capitulating on the Iraq supplemental? Caving on FISA?] What’s wrong with you people?

the very good folks at BAR
and i’m proud to call them friends, have argued to me several times now that conyers is a big part of the problem. it’s telling, innit? the elections mustn’t be put in jeopardy, heavens no! doing what’s right, stopping the genocide of an entire nation over a lie, someone get me my pearls, that’s just uncivil to speak of, cough, clutch.
i don’t know what is to be done, honestly. iirc, conyers is invulnerable in his district. i’m all for primary challenges, but i’m 99% convinced one would not only fail, but also severely alienate a significant part of the Black electorate from progressives who dared to organize one. conyers is king of his little patch, for a long time now.
so i guess we keep blogging on the hypocrisy and wait for an opening.
What's killing me...
… is that I can’t see the restoration of Constitutional government as anything but a winning platform.
Maybe that’s why I’m just a citizen instead of a legislator.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hard to ’splain to people. That’s why you had to start at once with it. Right now, they’re in a cowardly cul de sac and Bush is playing them like violins.
I looked at BAR. They seem to be pissed off about something. Can’t understand why.
We. Are. Going. To. Die. We must restore hope in the world. We must bring forth a new way of living that can sustain the world. Or else it is not just us who will die but everyone. What have we got to lose? Go forth and Fight!—Xan
I''d advise more than that
Hell yes, keep blogging, do the candlelight vigil thing, send lawyers and money, do everything legal and open and honest to try to change opinion and end it. Try to convince the electorate and keep those cards, letters, emails and phone calls aimed at the Congresscritters.
But kids, keep an eye on that back door, and have your survival kit no more than a step away.
If Cheneyburton is to steal another $election in 2008 with only a 20% approval rating, it is going to have to pull some pretty serious shit out to fling at the fan.
And we’re approaching the now or never date really soon.
