"Creative class" [cough] weighs in on Obama's New York Hello to Hillary

Barack “No Mas” Obama supporter Big Media Matt says Obama’s gesture was intentional (“pretty cool”; take that, Jeralyn), but it’s all good, because it’s meta: A crowd pleasing pop culture-friendly reference to rapper Jay-Z that the kidz will get immediately. So, if the coolest, smartest, most connected Obama supporters on the planet think the gesture was intentional, who am I to argue?

I’m not really sure that Matt wants to go there, though:

After all, calling women whores and bitches would also be pop culture-friendly—that’s one reason I don’t listen to a lot of the newer music—but not what I would expect in a Presidential candidate.

Does Obama plan to go there next? Sure, why not, Matt? What could be the problem?

NOTE And this after Hillary said, in the debate, that Obama could win, and she’d do everything she could to help him. Even leave out flipping the bird, and stick with the tone and the “brushing off” shit. Just listen to it. My fucking God. So much for extending the olive branch, eh?

I'm reposting from the "Stay Classy" thread

Jay-Z’s Dirt off your shoulder lyrics.

I like this line best:

If you feelin’ like a pimp nigga, go and brush your shoulders off

I guess that’s “post-racial”

————————————————————————
“Real ponies don’t oink” - Patrick McManus

Jay-Z didn't get his a** handed to him, though

If anyone was the so-called “pimp,” it was Hillary.

George Allen

Seriously, Obama is close to George Allen territory. He thinks he is cool, but he is really repulsive.

Expect a Obama/Jay-Z mash-up

video, with the lyrics on the screen.

That IS macaca territory.

————————————————————————
“Real ponies don’t oink” - Patrick McManus

When George stepped in macaca

the crowd he was talking to thought it was funny too.

How did that work out for him?

————————————————————————
“Real ponies don’t oink” - Patrick McManus

A mash-up would be sad

I doubt Obama’s attempt to portray himself as tough, hip hop style, will hurt him in terms of racial politics, but it should be seen for what it is: pathetic. Jay never pretended to be a bad-ass after totally getting owned.

That song is all about brushing off haters, never letting them (or life’s pitfalls) rattle you, throw you off your game. And it specifically mentions that “ladies can be pimps, too.” Again, Hillary was the pimp in the debate. She was the one who brushed off the dirt, while Obama was the clown.

Obama supporters

will love it.

I suggest letting it go.

Nothing can stop The One now*.

Anything short of Obama getting the nomination will result in a complete collapse of The Matrix.

I will be writing in Gravel come November. (If Obama wants to play on my sense of integrity, be careful of what you wish for.)

Done.Finito.Kaput.

*except the GE in which he loses.

I don't believe it

I am not voting for Obama for dog catcher, but assuming that he flip the bird at Hillary is to assume that he’s worse than Dubya and I don’t buy it.

There's a pattern

New York, Jan 15: US presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s so-called ‘clean campaign’ turned slightly mucky when one of his staffers took a swipe at rival Hillary Clinton through the candidate’s theme song.

As Obama and his wife Michelle walked proudly into his victory party following his surprising win over Hillary in the Iowa caucuses, the sound system blared rapper Jay-Z’s song “99 Problems.”

The song contains the lyrics: “I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain’t one.”

That "New" Video

Looks to be the same speech from a slightly different angle, so it shows a different crowd. I don’t think it’s two instances of it.

Oxy - 1 problem

The “99 problems” story is/was false.

Debunked (warning - dKos diary)

Includes links to video of Obama entering the event and taking the stage and the official playlist of the campaign.

A pro-Obama Kos diary and a dime...

… will get you a cup of coffee.

In fact, I called the Post, and they stood by the story. Sorry that I’m taking the Post over The Obama 527 Formerly Known The Kos Community, but that’s where we are these days.

Now, I didn’t use that link in my post (dammit, OxyCon) exactly because that would allow detractors to drag the post off topic.

I take it that no pro-Obama poster on this thread has no problem with the disrespect Obama shows?

[x] Any (D) in the general. [ ] Any mullah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his (R) heart.

he's an ass--so much for "unity"

— and he’s so pissy. This is his response to questions???

Maybe Obama Should Drop His Run For President

and become a stand-up comedian since that seems to be where his talents {cough} lie. He could be a lead in for hip-hop groups.

Never imagined that I would not evidently vote for the Dem candidate no matter who it was but Obama has crossed so many lines of what I believe is acceptable that it looks like I will either write in a candidate for president or leave that slot blank.

Post story: As Obama and

Post story:
As Obama and his wife, Michelle, strolled triumphantly into his victory party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 3, Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” was blaring.
Here’s the video: So, we have your phone call to the Post who, shockingly, told you they stand by their Page 6 story, against video evidence that contradicts the story. Sorry to drag the post off topic. I will withhold further comment on “99 problems”. :: I think you are asking whether I have a problem with Obama’s “disrespect”. His stump speech tone and comments - no. His “two-fingered scratch” - no. His “brush-off” gesture - no. Is the etymology of this pop culture reference paramount here? I say no. I don’t think Obama is endorsing distasteful lyrics. But I concede that reasonable minds may differ here.

Mana: That was not a "two-fingered scratch"

that was a one-finger salute.

Quit trying to push such an obvious lie, the video is clear. You are destroying your own credibility.

Reasonable minds may differ but facts are stubborn things.

“Real ponies don’t oink” - Patrick McManus

Mana: Do you have a video showing what was playing

just before the one you posted?

————————————————————————
“Real ponies don’t oink” - Patrick McManus

I already made my case

here.

This picture and my own frame by frame analysis convinced me that his index finger was extended. Are you calling Jeralyn unreasonable and uncredible?

"Do I have a video..."

No and neither does the Post apparently.

Ah, I get it. A video from the OFB is unproblematic

Manah, I do understand why you’d want to talk about what I deliberately didn’t post on, now that OxyÇon foolishly opened the door to past, dead issues, instead of talking about Obama’s present behavior; the logic reminds me a lot of that used by wingers in the Killian affair.

So, let me ask you again: Now that pop culture references are OK, and in particular those for rappers like JayZee, is it OK to start calling Hillary a “whore” again? How about “bitch”? Is that cool, as creative classist Yglesias thinks?

[x] Any (D) in the general. [ ] Any mullah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his (R) heart.

Ha ha ha - good try Mana

I’m not calling jeralyn anything.

I guess Obama didn't get permission

from Axelrod to flip the bird to Hillary, because the Obots are everywhere in the pro-Hillary blogosphere trying to walk it back.

Reposted from the confluence:

Three points

1. It was definitely a 1-finger scratch, and he used his middle finger. Some videos are not clear on this but at least one is very clear.

2. The crowd laughed and cheered, and it is clear they thought he was giving Hillary the finger. Otherwise, what were they reacting to?

3. Obama pauses for the reaction, but never looks up. If he wasn’t expecting a reaction, why didn’t he look up to see what the crowd was cheering about? There was no other reason for him to expect a reaction, he hadn’t said an “applause” line or anything else. If it was an unconcious act, the cheers should have startled him.

Is it too late to bring Kucinich back?

Or at least John Edwards?

…for the rest of us

OK

Manah, I do understand why you’d want to talk about what I deliberately didn’t post on, now that OxyÇon foolishly opened the door to past, dead issues, instead of talking about Obama’s present behavior; the logic reminds me a lot of that used by wingers in the Killian affair.

Wow. Like you say, I responded to OxyCon - lower hanging fruit, perhaps. You asked me to reply to the original topic and I did engage in this part of the discussion. Then you accuse me of not wanting to talk about Obama’s current behavior, comparing me to wingers. Well at least you didn’t say “Thanks for posting”. I must be doing something right ;).

To answer your question: No. Its derragatory to call anyone a bitch or whore.

Is the “brush off” cool? I’m certainly not qualified to answer that.

Is the “brush off” an endorsement of profane and misogynist lyrics? I don’t think so. As Davidson points out, the connotation of the gesture is benign: “brushing off haters”. Part of what makes something a part of pop culture is its nature of holding its own distinct meaning. I’m guessing that the meaning of a “brush off” is far enough removed from the disparaging aspects of JayZ and music to be a non-issue. I admit, though, before last night I hadn’t heard of it (I think you admitted the same). Would invoking DC’s football team or “Eeny meeny miney moe” be unpresidential? (Imperfect analogies, I know, but pop culture references seeded with politically incorrect etymology.)

I See no index finger here

Photobucket

Mana or Davidson: can you show me where the song

is all about brushing off haters? Here are the lyrics:

You’re now tuned into the muh’fuckin greatest
Turn the music up in the headphones
Tim, you can go and brush your shoulder off nigga
I got you, yeah

[Chorus: Jay-Z]
If you feelin’ like a pimp nigga, go and brush your shoulders off
Ladies is pimps too, go and brush your shoulders off
Niggaz is crazy baby, don’t forget that boy told you
Get, that, dirt off your shoulder

[Verse One]
I probably owe it to y’all, probably to be locked by the force
Tryin to hustle some things, that go with the Porsche
Feelin no remorse, feelin like my hand was forced
Middle finger to the law, nigga grippin ma balls
Stab the ladies they love me, from the bleachers they screamin
All the ballers is bouncin, they like the way I be leanin
All the rappers be hatin, off the track that I’m makin
But all the hustlers they love it just to see one of us make it
Came from the bottom the bottom, to the Top of the Pops
Nigga London, Japan and I’m straight off the block
Like a running back, get it man, I’m straight off the block
I can run it back nigga cause I’m straight with the Roc

[Chorus]

[Chorus Two]
You gotta get, that, dirt off your shoulder
You gotta get, that, dirt off your shoulder
You gotta get, that, dirt off your shoulder
You gotta get, that, dirt off your shoulder

[Verse Two]
Your homey Hov’ in position, in the kitchen with soda
I just whipped up a watch, tryin to get me a Rover
Tryin to stretch out the coca, like a wrestler, yessir
Keep the Heckler close, you know them smokers’ll test ya
But like, fifty-two cards when I’m, I’m through dealin
Now fifty-two bars come out, now you feel ’em
Now, fifty-two cars roll out, remove ceiling
In case fifty-two bras come out, now you chillin
with a boss bitch of course S.C. on the sleeve
At the 40/40 club, ESPN on the screen
paid a grip for the jeans, plus the slippers is clean
No chrome on the wheels, I’m a grown-up for real
Jigga.

[Verse Three]
Your boy back in the building, Brooklyn we back on the map
Me and my beautiful beeeeeeeitch in the back of that ’Bach
I’m the realest that run it, I just happen to rap
I ain’t gotta clap at ’em, niggaz scared of that black
I drop that Black—Album then I, back—out it
As the best rapper alive nigga ask about me
From Bricks to Billboards, from grams to Grammys
The O’s to opposite, Orphan Annie
You gotta pardon Jay, for sellin out the Garden in a day
I’m like a young Marvin in his hey’
I’m a hustler homey, you a customer crony
Got some, dirt on my shoulder, could you brush it off for me?

You’re now tuned into the muh’fuckin greatest

Best rapper alive, best rapper alive

There is one line about “rappers be hatin,” but that’s it.

“Real ponies don’t oink” - Patrick McManus

The interesting thing about that song...

… is how it seems to tie together so many of the Obama campaign’s Hopeful campaign themes:

Pimping Chelsea out.. Hillary as a whore…

I guess misogyny is OK now, and we should all just lay back and enjoy.

Well its viral

The Nation
That popular youth gesture grew out of “Dirt Off Your Shoulder,” a hit song in 2003. As Wikipedia explains, it refers to “getting enemies off your chest by brushing your shoulders off.” Blogger Spencer Ackerman, who regularly mixes political analysis with hip hop references, immediately heralded the move as “perhaps the coolest subliminal cultural reference in the history of American politics.” A YouTube clip of the cultural moment, uploaded by the Obama Campaign, swiftly drew over 100,000 views on Thursday. And then the mashups started.
Obama on hip hop:
I love the art of hip hop. I don’t always love the message of hip hop. There are times when even … with the artists I named — the artists I love, you know — there’s a message that is not only sometimes degrading to women; not only uses the n-word a little too frequently; but also something I’m really concerned about, it’s always talking about material things. Always talking about how I can get something. How I’ve got more money…
:: (Lambert: Shuster =/= Obama campaign)

Got it! "Bitches," pimps," and "whores" are "cool", then?

That certainly explains a lot of the language that the Obama campaign has been using. Thanks for clearing that up.

Obviously, there’s treasure trove of intertextuality to be mined in Jay-Z lyrics:

You’re now tuned into the muh’fuckin greatest
Turn the music up in the headphones
Tim, you can go and brush your shoulder off nigga
I got you, yeah

[Chorus: Jay-Z]
If you feelin like a pimp nigga, go and brush your shoulders off

Classy.

Presidential.

Hey, why not keep it simple? Obama got his clock cleaned in Philly. He blows town, gets in front of friendly audience, and then disses Hillary every way that he possibly can. Maybe he hates getting beat, maybe he can’t stand to be beaten by a woman. Maybe he’s just touchy and thin-skinned. Whatever.

And after Hillary said this:

I will do everything to make sure that the people who supported me support our nominee.

I will do everything to make sure that the people who supported me support our nominee.

I will go anywhere in the country to make the case.

So we will certainly do whatever is necessary to make sure that a Democrat is in the White House next January.

Next time we extend the olive branch to Obama, it’s going to be at the end of a sharp stick. Because otherwise, apparently, he’s going to take our arm off to the elbow.

Wow!

OxyConLooks like I stirred things up a bit here.
Most times I don’t revisit threads I previously posted on simply because I’ve spent the past 8 years arguing with the Bush cult and I have grown very tired of arguing with people about politics, so I tend to just try and make a point, then move on. Saves me alot of time and aggravation. That’s why I make comments to blogs, rather than have my own blog. That’s why I guess it’s real easy to win an argument by simply linking to the DailyKos website, as if there’s alot of credibility there.
Amazing.
As for who to believe…I think I’d tend to believe the news organization that can be sued for libel, over the website full of screaming hyenas.
And my original point remains valid. There is a pattern here of Obama using black popular culture to send messages to the people who are tuned into it, as a way to pull off some smartass, inside type joke. Whether he’s borrowing anti-white lines from Spike Lee films or body movements from misogynist rap songs, no one can deny that there isn’t a pattern, even the DailyKos cultists.
So link to that mana!
Obama says he’s a big Jay-Z fan.
Someone should ask him what he thinks of his daughters listening to crap like that, same as him dragging the little girls into a “Church” where the “Pastor” dry humps the lectern.
Obama and websites like DailyKos, Huffpo and DU far from lifting America up, are dragging it down by mainstreaming this crap. By their rationalizing Rev Wright’s anti-Americanism and bigotry and even saying that what Wright said was actually true. They say “but Wright was a Marine way back in 1962”, well Timothy McVeigh was an Army soldier, and he obviously hated America too. The DailyKos websites even try to rationalize Obama’s latest gaffe and they all say that that is true too, that many Americans bitterly cling to guns and God and are xenophobes.
Someone tell me again how all this behavior does anything but tear this country down?
After winning arguments with right wingers for years, they always ended the same way with the right winger calling me an America hating Leftist, to which I’d say GFY.
Well, you know what? Those right wingers didn’t know me too, well, but they sure had DailyKos and the other far left blogs figured out.

so passive-aggressive too--

very unleaderlike in itself.

contempt...

there is a difference between an “I’m not going to let this bother me” brush off the shoulder, and the contempt displayed by Obama in his gesture.

Brush something off your shoulder. I’ll wait…

Was your palm down? Mine was when I tried it. Obama didn’t “brush” something off his shoulder, he flicked something off of it. Repeatedly. In a gesture of utter contempt for anyone who dares to not abide by his agenda…

Just so we're clear

I don’t think Obama hates America, nor is a stealth Muslim, nor a radical. I don’t think he is a sexist or a misogynist.

I think he is playing a dangerous game by “winking and nudging” certain groups in his effort to win. He is fanning flames that need to be put out.

The worst part is, he’s not the only one who’s gonna get burned.

————————————————————————
“Real ponies don’t oink” - Patrick McManus

Yes, watch the Jay-Z video

the lyrics are attricious to many, but as Davidson said, they are more about the symbolic throwing off of oppression, and his actions in the video are distinctive. He uses a flat hand brush off his shoulder(incorporated into a dance move, of course), Obama flicked something as if it were a bug.

Two totally different visual concepts. That thought had been niggling at me. The so-called connections to the “cool” community are exaggerated, IMO. It is just a grasping at straws attempt by Obama supporters to have an “innocent” rationalization for his actions.
