Did I mention that John McCain is old?

at least he has a living parent--
unlike Obama.
this one is gonna suck even worse than the last one--they're sitting at a table and no followups allowed--again.
and Obama's just coasting--no new anything from him tonight-- he's in re-runs already-- http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/...
"... He is not expected to offer any new policy proposals, advisers said, or say anything he hasn’t already addressed. ..."
NYT's headline--"Obama Debate Prep: Style Over Substance"
for that link above.
O/T: May I say how much I hate "folks?"
(In the article, the Obama team used "folks" to describe the debate audience, so...)
I remember back on September 11, 2001 when Bush said we were going to get "these folks" who just massacred thousands of individuals and I thought, "WTF
?!" I understand using such language when talking to people face to face, but not when they're talking to the press or the The People at large. It comes off as silly instead of serious, like, wearing sweats to a presidential debate instead of a suit and tie. Sure, it could be done and maybe some people will relate, but c'mon.
You may...
regardless, but I hate it, too.

Sorry, I don't get it - how does a living parent come into play?
What am I missing?
both Obama's parents died young/ youngish--
I think neither even lived to be McCain's age, let alone McCain's mother's age.
Yawn.
Funny that the young whippersnapper is just as boring as the old codger.
I'm with Murtha's constituents. No enthusiasm.
more boring and more scripted, actually---
with McCain, there's always some emotion--or some suppressed emotion.
"What won't you do as president?"
Guaranteed to be the first question and/or second and/or third----again.
The Village has already set it all in concrete--which they always do to Democrats. If Obama had any balls, he'd point out that no one cared when Bush, and Reagan, etc, were all bankrupting us.
oh ho--digby on Schieffer--
"... Schieffer, you recall, is the guy who couldn't fathom how being shot down in a plane over Vietnam wasn't a qualification for the Presidency. If there's anyone who's willing to save McCain's honor, it's Schieffer." -- http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/t...
he is a Republican and has had enormous access to Bush and all his unindicted coconspirators.
What, you thought Schieffer didn't need to draw out Clark?
Seriously, what has McCain got, except five years as a POW?

they both have nothing--
that's the whole problem.
i'm not gonna watch--
they just annoy me too much.
let me know what i missed, ok?
In a word, squat.
"You'd better get this straight. Wise up before it's too late." -- Sister Sledge
"Capitalists on the way up, communists on the way down." -- Stirling Newberry
Gleep--McCain begins by repeating the Freddie/Fannie canard--
Sheesh.
Does he really believe that?
Taxes
It pisses me off that they are both very much right-of-center when it comes to taxing, yet, Obama gets attacked for being too liberal on taxes. I wish he was more liberal on taxing. If I hear them arguing who will cut taxes the most one more time I'm going to scream.
I forgot it was on...
Now it's on and I have a feeling I haven't missed much.
President Bush
I've been waiting for McCain to deliver that line, to be honest.
HOLC
McCain just specifically brought it up.
JFK Assassination
Uh-oh!
When Obama Goes Negative...
...he calls it 'vigorous debate' and everyone seems to agree with that characterization, and he's portrayed it as such from Day One. I'm tired of this euphemism.
Obama: "We have to be careful with how we deal with supporters"
Oh, this is rich.
What does that mean?
A little context, please.

This is getting weird.
And, not in a good way.
why did schieffer introduce Ayers?
that was fucked up.
Obama on BIden: Always there for the workin' people. Yech.
I notice he did not mention Biden's support of the recent bankruptcy bill when describing how Biden is always there for the "little people."
Earlier, Obama listed Biden, Lugar, and Gen. Jones as people from whom he seeks foreign relations advice--and would surround himself with in the WH.
So, Lugar's going to get a cabinet seat??
McCain did say something about t-shrts worn by Obama supporters-
did not mention what they said.
I believe he was referring
I believe he was referring to this.
Yeah, no way he would actually repeat what was on the shirts. There are photos of the people wearing them if you're interesting in looking.
Jawbone, it would have been indecent to do so.
There is no way McCain could have gotten away with talking about the specific of the T-shirts.
McCain refuses litmus test for Supreme Court.
Not news, but the base hates hearing him say this. It's one of the reasons they despise him as a Republican.
Damon, I know that--I imagine there is great googling about
t-shirts at Obama rallies!
Energy discussion: Obama said that within 10 years he will achieve having no imported oil from Middle East or Venezuela (what a sad little swipe at Venezuela! Could be a different prez there in a few years or we could be buddies--sad little rap on Chavez [who does supply low cost oil to the poor and needy in this country]}. We get, based on Jan '08 numbers about 21.8% of oil imports from various ME countries, 10.8% from Venezuela--so he's saying we'll reduce oil consumption in some way by about one-third.
Or just import more from other nations....
Healthcare discussion: Scary--HuffPo reports Obama saying to fundraiser last weekend the following about having "to cut some things out."
Which is it, Senator Obama? The healthcare plan you described on the debate? Or something to fight the Dems over?
There he goes again--women have to have a religious adivser in
order to make a decision about abortion! Yikes!
"Sexuality is sacred" -- Okaaaay. What if it's just normal?
Now, McCain is going on about "health of the mother" being stretched to fit any situation. They both, well, suck.
Ugh...
Here we are still arguing abortion and taxes and Ayers and so on...Why don't we ever get to argue about transportation, urban planning, the environment (in a big way), etc? This was the most horrible debate when it came to actual issues. The VP debate still beat all of the three of McCain/Obama when it comes to real issues.
Damon, you are so right--covering well-plowed territory, and not
anything new to add to real understanding of what either will do as prez.
Obama wants to stay the reflective surface to be all things to all voters. McCain might have taken some strong steps to say more--but he's contrained by being a, well, Repub.
And, what is this "urban" of which you speak?
One would think, following these "debates," that we are a nation without urban areas and definitely without any poverty.
Aarrrrrggghhhhh!
Again, I must ask, why did Obama tell the fundraiser attendees
that education spending is one of the areas where he will have “to cut some things out”???
What will he really do? Who's he trying to bamboozle?
I think Lambert had a post on this meeting, already.
Either that, or there is a post where Obama mentions the things he would sacrifice. It's rather recent. Perhaps, Lambert knows the one I'm talking about.
Jawbone
For the first time ever, I imagined what it must have been like for say a Canadian watching our debates felt like if they'd have switched into this debate only to hear the men running for the highest office in the world for the most powerful country in the world bickering over decided policy and/or incredibly insular policy. It must be extremely disappointing.
BTW, the questioning heavily favored McCain in this last debate. I'm surprised.
Obama hates old people
And women.
And old women.
If he didn't, why has he not apologized for the mean and nasty things his supporters have said to lambrert on the internets?
The answer is clear my frenz.
In clicking around the stations, everyone of the MCMers was
so pleased that Obama was cool and calm. Like, what were they expecting? Raging Bull? Crikey.
And the word on McCain was that he was tense!
I hadn't seen tense--I saw the usual upper body stiffness McCain has, presumably from the war injuries.
But, hey, it's what the MCM does--try to shape public perceptions.
Provide facts and fact-based observations? So last century.
BTW, did either of the two actually answer the question about
the very high deficit and what if anything they would do about it?
BTW
Hillary is Obama's debate response surrogate, tonight. I'm really not sure why, to be honest.
Hillary: "Democrats Ready To Lead"
And "it took Democratic president" to clean up after a Republican mess.
She still believes, still praising Democratic ideals, even when the actual party isn't living up to them. *sigh*
Joe the Plumber
From the Guardian live blog. His head's as bald as Hank Paulson's!

Where was Hillary speaking as Obama's debate response surrogate?
What did I miss?
Mark Halperin on Charlie Rose has hit the Clintons in almost
every comment he's made. In criticizing McCain as being too emotional, in contrast to the zen-like even temper of Obama (so cool, calm, and collected), he added that McCain was like the Clintons in that they lead melodramatic lives. And the public doesn't want that again. Huh? The public, Mark?
He came back to that again later, saying that Obama has dreams of what he will do to better the country, but he doesn't feel a "need" to be president--as Bill Clinton did, or LBJ did, and Hillary and McCain do. Again, say wha'?
Then someone added that Obama was burning with amibition, but was zen-like about it... or something close to that.
The MCMers are nearly overcome with their adoration of The One. If they raise nagging questions, they soon drop that approach and get right back in line.
Maria Bartiromo said initially that she was surprised that by now Obama didn't have 3 or 4 things he could list when asked what he would do about restraining spending and working to lower the looming ever-larger deficit' she said McCain did better on that question. Doris Kearns Goodwin also brought that up, before Maria actually; she also noted McCain answered the question better than Obama. However, for some reason, in later commenta about the same thing, they both got back on the Obama is Wondrous bus. No more mention that McCain had done well in at least that area.
Very interesting to watch the CW
taking place before my eyes, in less than 30 minutes.
Obama: cool, calm, collected, very presidential. (However, no answers, no ideas as to what to do about Big Me$$ really--that was said early in the discussion--then dropped.)
McCain: Erratic, almost inchorent, disorganized. Too bad he didn't speak truth to the public and tell them they were going to pay and suffer for this big Paulson Fix and the recession. Tell the public to "man up," and then tie that to McCain's own sacrifices in the Vietnam War (which some people think was WWII--even WWI--per Bobo, to let everyone know he's very, very old).
Roger Simon (Politico): McCain fails, Obama is not rattled
Yep, this is the new narrative:
Seriously, this would be funny if it weren't so sad. I can hear the jokes now.
Call: "Obama is so cool..."
Response: "How cool is he?"
Call: "Obama's so cool that _____"
Does anyone recall how badly the fair-weather, so-called Democrats ripped on Al Gore and John Kerry for being too cool? There is not anything that Obama's supporters will not apologize for for him. Obama doesn't have any weaknesses, because he not only has his strengths, but every weakness is also a strength.
It's official: Obama is Magic. The irony here is that not only did McCain not have a miracle, but only Obama can produce miracles. lol Perhaps, McCain needs to pray to Obama for a miracle, no?
this is surprising-Halperin:
he graded McCain higher than Obama --
http://thepage.time.com/mark-halperins-g... --
on McCain: "... Overall: During the first half of the debate, the Republican nominee showed off the best of himself -- dedicated, sincere, patriotic, cheery, earnest, commanding--all without seeming old or anxious. He even scored some points in the "change" category, against the candidate who has owned the theme. He was also clear, upbeat, and totally on message. To his detriment, however, he became more aggressive and distracted during the second half, and perhaps lost a chance for the truly dramatic event he needs to change the game. Still, if a silent majority of persuadable voters watched the debate, they saw why McCain's advisers have faith in him and still believe he can win this race."
on Obama: "... Overall: During the first half of the debate, the Democratic nominee too often displayed his worst traits-- petty, aloof, imperious-- and behaved as if he had some place better to be, although he became warmer and more engaged as the evening progressed. He did not seem to have an explicit strategy, answering the questions piecemeal as they came his way, without driving a message or even a theme. He retained his consistently unflappable air, and had a few fine moments. If he was sitting on his lead, it worked-- but perhaps at the expense of relinquishing part of it."
Lambert is now an Old Woman?
Is that true?
I'm slow, trying to keep up with this intertoobs thing.

Around these parts we call cucumber slices circle bites
seems like it was bitchier
if nothing else.
I've already seen the "I'm not President Bush" and Joe the Plumber stuff repeatedly within just 1/2 hour of turning on the tv.
and the Ayers stuff, of course--
i guess i didn't miss much.
So what if Obama's parents are dead?
Both my parents died by the time I was 35. Is that some kind of disqualification?
the point is that if you're not from a long-lived family,
it might not be wise to make a giant issue out of someone else's age--especially since they -and their mother too- have already outlived his family.
Um.
You do know Obama's father was killed in a car accident, right?
he caused it-- his excessive drinking caused many accidents--
going back to the mid-60s. He drove himself off the road because he was drunk--which he had been for decades.
"... Obama's worsening drinking binges strained his career and marriage.
"He would pass out on the doorstep," said Leo Odera Omolo, a former drinking buddy and friend of the family. "Ruth would complain he's getting out of hand." The couple divorced in the early 1970s.
He was injured in several alcohol-related car accidents, including one in 1965 that killed a passenger, a recently engaged postal worker who was a friend from Obama's hometown.
...
On Nov. 24, 1982, as he drove home about 11 p.m., Obama's car ran off the road and crashed, according to the Nairobi Times. ..."
And this has to do with Obama's qualifications for office
how, exactly?
You haven't quite made that clear. And I have to say, I find it personally offensive that you're making the argument that Obama not having a living parent is somehow a mark against him.
