Deforming public education in America

Educational Reformers Celebrate “The Bell Curve”

It is interesting to note, therefore, that the so-called “educational reformers” who have the most direct influence over schools and school systems which serve minority children, really seem to like the American Enterprise Institute:

Michelle Rhee, Chancellor of DC Public Schools, a system which serves mostly minority children, has been a frequent speaker at AEI.

Joel Klein, Chancellor of New York City Public Schools, another largely minority district, has also been addressing the Institute with some frequency lately.

Mike Feinberg, co-founder of KIPP schools - the organization which is being touted as the “savior” of minority children” - has also been making appearances.

And lest we forget, Wendy Kopp, founder of Teach for America, the organization who sends in temporary teachers to work in low income schools districts, also appears at AEI.

One has to ask the question, therefore; why are these so-called reformers so involved in an organization whose members think that the KKK is funny and that black people are genetically inferior?

One also has to gravely question the philosophies of such individuals who are so closely responsible for the education of minority children.

What kind of reform do you think they are really trying to make?

Are these parasites showing up in your school system?

The whole accountability in education movement

is all over the place, with their standardized testings and accreditation systems that go back to Reaganite Malcolm Baldridge... the same super duper high quality standard org that gave the University of Phoenix its accreditation (pass the puke bucket).

At my level, we have seen this incarnated in the Spellings report which is directed at extending No Child Left Behind to higher education (cuz it works so well at the primary and secondary levels).

But accountability is good, right, cuz everybody knows that American colleges and universities are full of commies who indoctrinate the youth and discriminate against conservative scholars so bad that the poor things have to go work for the AEI to push their brilliant ideas on reforming education.

Testing == fees (or possibly...

rents?)

That's the common factor in both the financial system generally and the mortgage meltdown in particular. "Complex" and "innovative" equals lots of fees.

How conservatives work -- replace professionalism with a marketable product, using the law to force it in place, if need be, then take a cut.

Somerby called his shot on Rhee two years ago, I think (too lazy to link).

Reform? Reform what?

Their whole point is to do away with the public education system, remember...

...for the rest of us

true enough

but their whole point is to constantly hammer at the fact that teachers are not actually teaching but indoctrinating and ideologically-biased incompetents and therefore they can present themselves as the objective bearers of educational standards.

Not sure if it's O/T

But in the incomparable archives of the Daily Howler are many well-considered takedowns of false narratives re: minority education, mostly oft-repeated, self-serving tales about how throwing a sop to a minority school changed everything.

Absolutly on topic

it was the Daily Howler that got me to start paying attention to this stuff
