rollcall now--did they do the hotel thing or no?
CA and IL have passed so far--i know IL will be the one that puts him over the top, as always.
but why did CA pass--it's 400+ votes.
what's the total needed now? 2025, or more?
and i wonder if the totals/state results now are even real...
some game they're playing --states yield to Il, and now they're yielding to NY--this number should be closer to 1/2 and 1/2 or else it's fixed, i'd say.
NY -- Hillary -- "acclamation"
Hillary, Schumer, Rangel, Silver, Paterson-- all on tv--
so staged--unity, i guess
Hillary just requested suspension of the roll call.
and requested acclamation.
We didn't even hear *New York*'s vote count.
we didn't hear a lot of states--CA, NY,
a bunch of others--and all that come alphabetically after NY too.
"Pursuant to the rules"
Irony to the end.
UPDATE Though it's touching, truly, to see tears of joy. It would be wonderful if I were wrong, and they will not be disappointed.

another thing they made Hillary do--
this is really too much.
Of Course Hillary Had To Do This
as I said at Talk Left, she's the only one working to salvage the mess that the Obama campaign and the party made. If she didn't do it, who would? Pelosi? Dean? Obama? Puh-lease. What all of this "make Hillary do it" has really demonstrated is that she's the only leader in the party.
How does this even help?
Honestly.
Kabuki? Sham? Farce? Orchestrated? Staged?
I was so angry at NJ voting unanimously for Obama, which meant rejecting my vote and those of all who voted by Hillary Clinton, that I couldn't control myself and yelled, uh, imprecations at Corzine, whom I like a lot. Scared the cats--and myself!
The votes in a Dem primary, even when it's so close, apparently don't matter much. (Yes, I do realize Hillary released her delegates--which she had to do, alas.)
And it pained me to see that Hillary had to call for the acclimation.
Now Jeff Greenfield is saying that Bill Clinton has to redemm himself to night with his speech.
Give me a break.
Lets do a summary
1. Game the caucuses.
2. Michigan/Florida fiasco.
3. Superdelegate mash.
4. Steal the votes on the convention floor.
Why do we not have smoked fill rooms? Why do we go through this charade. Kennedy, Kerry and company got what they wanted.
they always have--
DC Dems have always ensured their candidate becomes the nominee--i really still wonder why they ever let Bill be the nominee at all. (i understand Carter--after Watergate it had to be a non-DC person who was very squeaky-clean)
Why the pretense
what a waste of money and resources.

(i don't see any "acclamation"--it certainly hasn't happened in my lifetime i don't think--64 til now)
tv's creaming at how much "progress" the country
has made (as if racism and inequality just disappeared like magic--poof!)
Black Folks
are fucked. The country has moved beyond racism. All the straight white men agree, we're a just society. Nothing to see here. Nothing to talk about. Nothing to do.
Anyone know if states with bound delegates didn't vote as bound?
I'm not an election law specialist, but I think some delegates are legally bound to vote in a representative, proportional fashion.

"Sneak Peek at Bill Clinton’s Denver DNC Speech"
foxforum.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/08/27/sneak-peek-at-bill-clintons-denver-dnc-speech/
This "James P. Pinkerton" is a real piece of work. I wonder if the cognitive dissonance involved with implying Obama would pardon Bin Laden takes some form of super powers. Is he really unaware the Bandar Bush and the bin Laden family ties to Bushies? The Saudi connections and the simple fact that bin Laden is free and Iraq is occupied for one simple reason, papa Bush and baby Bush's relations to the Saudis.
Lewis--Obama "akin to the movement"
--not. right now on CNN. he is a "personification of America"
and going on and on about what Bill "must do".
notice--no Superdelegates involved
at all
Good catch
They went for the acclaimation thing before the SD's got involved.

Don't SDs Vote With Their States?
so wouldn't their votes, if they cast them, be included in the state tallies?
Yes, they are
In spite of what the DNC thinks, they can't go back in time and erase all those public declarations in various papers and on news channels of superdelegates flocking to Obama. This isn't China--yet.
BINGO!
Its been my contention since WWTSBQ
began that the supers didn't want to have to go on record. That was the only reason why I wanted real vote. Not that I thought Hillary would win, but because it would put the supers on record.
The future does not look good for the Dems. The Dems may look the other way on voter fraud and stolen elections, but the GOP won't if it can help them win.
I'm truly depressed and pessimistic today. As they say on Star Wars: this is how liberty dies, to thunderous applause. When the "good guys" steal votes, there are no more "good guys". Sigh.
ooo-"wins make-believe Democratic party vote designed to be won"

This Entire Thing
is going to play into the GOP's affirmative action dogwhistle. They couldn't even have the usual sham vote they normally had. Obama needed his own very special sham vote.
Nobody pulls defeat from the jaws of victory like the Democratic Party. They may yet win this year, but it won't be for lack of trying to lose.
Bowers feels frustrated
Maybe it's the undemocratic nature of the proceedings?
Or could it be the emphasis on image over reality?
I know! It's the aroma of bullshit that permeates everything! (except Hillary)

Perhaps Next Time Bowers Will Consider
the wisdom of supporting a guy who is running on personality and a bipartisan schtick. You don't build movements on that, you build them on ideas. Sure, charismatic leaders help, but the Civil Rights movement was a lot bigger than MLK. At heart, it was driven by ideas. So was the New Deal and The Great Society. You don't support the candidate and hope the ideas come later.

Democrats in 2000: Count every vote!
Gosh, I wonder if the GOP is going to enjoy bringing that up. It's as if the DNC has given the Republican Party a loaded gun aimed right at the Jackass Party and dares them to shoot.

And now Jay Rockefeller

Via Talk Left, Greg Sargent reported on Wolfson's response earlier today:
In my dreams Fox and MSNBC destroy each other with CNN getting taken out by stray shrapnel. A pox on all of their houses.
i love Wolfson--
he trashed them to their faces during the primaries--he's not afraid of them.
it's so funny--MSNBO isn't even in the convention itself but outside. They're so not in the loop even tho they've been on their knees most often for Obama this whole cycle.
CNN seems to be getting every single important person simply by virtue of being inside.
and NBC (Brokaw/Williams) is inside too, but they relegated Matthews/Olbermann/etc to the suburbs. hah!

Clinton's accomplishments: erased!
Congratulations, everyone!
Jesse Jackson: full roll call.
Ted Kennedy: full roll call.
Hillary Clinton*, first woman to win a primary or a caucus; the winner of the most votes in the history of the Democratic Party and virtually tied in delegates in the closest primary in modern history: hell, no!
Will the great champion of voting fairness, Jimmy Carter, say anything about this nonsense? No, nor was he bothered with FL and MI. FL didn't bother Al Gore either (Just as the author of The Assault on Reason stood silent in the face of the media barrage on Clinton).
Fuck
. It. All. After all this, to think anyone would even vote to legitimize all of this misogynistic bullshit is beyond me. It's absurdly obvious that gender is the issue here. Sure, there's other standard elements of political corruption, but bigotry is the heart and soul of this operation because they know they could get away with it. And that's the worst part: they will.
*Yes, she "agreed" to it, like someone with a gun to their head.
i fear for what they'll all do before '12 to
knock her out forever...there's no way they'll allow her to be the nominee--whether Obama wins or loses.
Forget Clinton
How the hell can any woman run and be treated fairly after this? This entire primary has been a huge step backwards. If typical political corruption and double standards weren't enough, the overt incitement of bigotry was the preferred weapon of choice against Clinton and her supporters.
Everyone is learning a lesson from this and it's the wrong one.
Re: Forget Clinton
I think that efforts towards both racial and gender equality have been hugely damaged during this campaign. These are sad times.
some GOP woman will break
the ceiling, i bet--it certainly won't be us after all this.
Those GOP women will be for misogynistic policies, though
Think: what Clarence Thomas is to blacks.
I am just stunned by this, I really am. I'm watching Daschle speak right now and amazed that misogyny runs so deep in our society that former leaders of the so-called "mommy" Party are not only not bothered by the bigoted extremism shown, but they're grateful for it.
If McCain Is Smart He'll Pick a Woman VP
not so much to show Obama up, but because there's no way the Obama camp and its supporters (including Olbermann and the blogger boys) would be able to reign in the misogyny and sexism. You can see it in how they treat Cindy McCain. And unlike the lame Dems, every time they said something, the GOP would hit 'em hard for it and remind everyone that this is what they did to Hillary. It might not win McCain that many votes given his awful record on women's issues, but it could seriously dampen women's turnout for the Dems and when that happens the GOP usually wins.
How about Anita Bryant?
Now that Margaret Thatcher is (presumably) out of the running?
Actually, that would be a smart move, and the McCain campaign, whatever else it may be, is not stupid.

Gawd, Bill is smart
It's to great to hear somebody work their way through a beautifully constructed paragraph while showing they understand the impact of every word -- and while keeping a crowd on each one..
Dunno about "preserve, protect and defend," though. FISA? Just not so. Truthiness, Bill!
Looks like they went the C-i-C route, though, not the economy route. Would be interesting to see of Obama reserved that one for himself tomorrow.

Kerry? no.
no. no. no. no. no.
Amazing interaction between Chris Matthews and Tom Brokaw
On msnbc, after Bill Clinton's convention speech.
Matthews: Tom, first, what did you make of the acknowledgment of the service of John McCain in very galling terms?
Brokaw: Well, uh, look. For Bill Clinton and for anyone in the Democratic Party for that matter, it's a very tricky case taking on John McCain and trying to rough him up. When John McCain was sitting in a prison in Hanoi, Bill Clinton was writing letters to his ROTC commander and trying to get out of the draft, which he did successfully.
What part don't they like?
The peace? Or the prosperity?

Both
They don't fight the wars or worry about paying the bills. But they get higher ratings for covering the wars, and that means more money to pay their salaries.
Then they write books about it.
who was McCain writing
Bill might have been writing letters to ROTC, but who was McCain writing letters to during his stay in the Hanoi Hilton?
Oh that's right, it's a secret (a military secret).

I don't care what anyone thinks of the source of that meme, I'm laughing, and laughing hardily.
Glad I Could Make You Laugh, DamonMI
it beats the alternative. Besides I'm beginning to think Arthur Silber is right and if you can just forget the larger implications, this election season is getting more hilarious by the day. It's farce at this point.
Michigan Delegate Split
Michigan's delegation voted 125 vs 27, Obama.
I guess once you start a lie, you have to follow it through to its conclusion, huh? I'm so glad this damn this is over. I'm not sure I'd ever like to vote in another primary, again. Voting in January here in Michigan was difficult enough realizing that my vote may not count. Watching my delegation validate what happened to my state by not only giving Obama all "uncommitted" votes, but then having Hillary delegates cross over in such numbers is a kick in the stomach.
Since this nomination, tonight, magically destroys racism, can tonight also be the magical end to Hillary Hate

McC VP float: KBH or Palin
They say Dems are "scared" McC will pick a woman. Heh.
As I Said Upthread
Dems should be scared. Not so much because McCain will suddenly become a chick magnet, but because some of the fauxgressives and those in the Obama campaign will let their misogyny show again. They'll spew hate all over the place because they can't help themselves (and many don't even see their own misogyny). Which may not drive women to McCain, but it will certainly drive them from Obama.
Lifetime poll: Woman VP would cost McCain--with women
I don't know how good Lifetime is at polling but here you go:
Personally, I think it would only work if the woman was seen as the epitome of competence (think: Meg Whitman).
O/T: How batshit is it that the majority of women in that poll believe misogyny was no critical factor as to why Clinton "lost" (read: the Democratic "establishment" chose Obama and railroaded Clinton)? Instead, they blame her for it. Jesus.
OFB "fun" with music
We've seen this before, no? Oh those crazy fans--wait, youth-dog-whistling campaign employees?! It's not like they are doing it to the Democrats-on-the-same-team who have lives or would be hurt or publicly disrespected. This one was an in-joke for Michelle, right?
John McCain VP
It's still my prediction that to dampen Obama's message of change, he'll go with a woman or minority. I'd have said a few months ago that he wouldn't be responding to Obama with his pick and go conventional, but I think things may have changed for him. I also don't think he's going to go the evangelical route like so many think he has to. Furthermore, it seems much more likely that he'd go for a minority than a woman given that any chose of a woman will be compared to Hillary.
On the convention, tonight, I was very happy to see Bill go cerebral in his defense of, and support for, Obama, which was actually more of a defense of, and support for, the Democratic Party. I simply can't imagine Obama being better than either of them, and certainly not better than both of them , together, displaying the Democratic platform when he hits up Invesco. The constant obsession by the media with the Clinton's sincerity kind of shows you just how much Obama's party has to prop him up to make him look acceptable. That Bill and Hillary have so much power is no fault of their own. If Obama looks weak next to either of them that's certainly not their faults.
maybe he'll do like bama
Maybe McCain will take his greatest weakness and highlight with someone who is the exact opposite to make his weaknesses so insanely obvious that no one could miss it, just like Obama did.
So for McCain that means picking someone young and hip who can use a computer (maybe even owns a Blackberry) and someone who is actually a conservative. Then maybe he'll start a whisper campaign about his ailing health and multiple cancers. It will be like the Cheney card, only opposite. Someone as VP that would wouldn't mind becoming President, totally opposite of Cheney.
