Obama finally talks about the economy in his latest ad (below), which I generally think is a good idea. The substance is fine, but the framing is for shit, IMO. He still can't say the D-word or even the R-word. The problem is not Washington. It is not the "outworn ideas of the Left and the Right." It is Republicans. That is the problem. And Democrats are the solution. At least I thought that would be the Democratic message. Instead, the message is that Obama is the solution and Washington is the problem. Then I guess we should all vote against our incumbent Democratic Congressmen since they are equally to blame as the Republicans? They are Washington, no?
And, btw, what outworn ideas of the left are you talking about, Barack? Economic justice, regulation, jobs, fair pay, antitrust enforcement, equal access to opportunity? Which one of those fucking wornout ideas of the left don't you support? I'd like to know before I go in and vote. Was Reagan right and Carter wrong? Or is it that you've just been watching Meet The Press for 20 years and so you've internalized all the loathing of Democrats and the mythical "left"? Don't want to sit at the uncool kids' table.
Just when I think I can get drunk, hold my nose and vote for the jackass, he has to go and make me angry all over again.
Although I will say this, next to the current crew of Republicans, nobody deserves to have the angry mob come after them for this mess more than Obama and the Unity
Democrats. If they won't put the blame on the GOP, then I have absolutely no sympathy when they get blamed and they will. There's no way the GOP is going to be this generous if Obama is President and the Congress is controlled by Democrats. Who is Washington, then? So if Obama can't fix all of this next year (and he can't, nobody can), then I guess he and the Democratic Congress are to blame. They will be Washington. If that's what they want (and they seem to), then that's going to be fine with me.

Transcript:
In the past few weeks, Wall Street's been rocked as banks closed and markets tumbled. But for many of you -- the people I've met in town halls, backyards and diners across America -- our troubled economy isn't news. 600,000 Americans have lost their jobs since January. Paychecks are flat and home values are falling. It's hard to pay for gas and groceries and if you put it on a credit card they've probably raised your rates. You're paying more than ever for health insurance that covers less and less.
This isn't just a string of bad luck. The truth is that while you've been living up to your responsibilities Washington has not. That's why we need change. Real change.
This is no ordinary time and it shouldn't be an ordinary election. But much of this campaign has been consumed by petty attacks and distractions that have nothing to do with you or how we get America back on track.
Here's what I believe we need to do. Reform our tax system to give a $1,000 tax break to the middle class instead of showering more on oil companies and corporations that outsource our jobs. End the "anything goes" culture on Wall Street with real regulation that protects your investments and pensions. Fast track a plan for energy 'made-in-America' that will free us from our dependence on mid-east oil in 10 years and put millions of Americans to work. Crack down on lobbyists -- once and for all -- so their back-room deal-making no longer drowns out the voices of the middle class and undermines our common interests as Americans. And yes, bring a responsible end to the war in Iraq so we stop spending billions each month rebuilding their country when we should be rebuilding ours.
Doing these things won't be easy. But we're Americans. We've met tough challenges before. And we can again.
I'm Barack Obama. I hope you'll read my economic plan. I approved this message because bitter, partisan fights and outworn ideas of the Left and the Right won't solve the problems we face today. But a new spirit of unity and shared responsibility will.

Lucy and the football, innit?
The ad is going along great and then he has to kick the party of FDR and Bill Clinton in the nuts. And for what!?
For What?
A damned good question, VL. Especially since the most non-Washington person running for national office is Sarah Palin. If Obama is not at all about Washington, then why did he choose Biden? If I want to get people who aren't Washington, who aren't the problem, why not just vote for Palin and the maverick who picked her? So it's not only crappy framing for Democrats, it's potentially crappy framing for Obama (which is why the McCain pick of Palin was evil genius).
If I were a Republican running against a Democratic incumbant in Congress, I'd totally run an ad saying that Obama is right and it's time to change Washington because people like Rep. X caused the current crisis. It would be hard for Obama to argue against it based on this ad.

How soon will we hear
McCain claiming that Obama is afraid to call himself a Democrat.
What is the game plan for Team Obama? Is he the firewall for
the uberwealthy business class against a real FDR-type 21st Century New Deal?
Is that why not naming of his political party? If he does view it as his party, rather than an electoral line to be used to get into office?
Why can I gain no traction in trying to trust this man? (Written as a wail of anguish.)
the gameplan is status-quo, like the Dems in Congress--
the only change will be in the face peddling it.
Axelrod is paid per ad run on-air, right?
this is a joke--entirely.
I hope all those millions of "small donors" (ha!) are happy that this is how the money's being spent.
always remember--“before we can truly reform”
these are the absolute preconditions on everything he says he'll do--
from yesterday's "big economy speech"-- "Times are hard. I will not pretend that the changes we need will come without cost — though I have presented ways we can achieve these changes in a fiscally responsible way. I know that we’ll have to overcome our doubts and divisions and the determined opposition of powerful special interests before we can truly reform a broken economy and advance opportunity.”
He's just got to throw "bitter" in there, doesn't he?
That means anybody who the FKD threw under the bus in the primaries is going to be labeled a "bitter" partisan as soon as they fight for their interests. IOW, Anglachel is right.
[ ] Very tepidly voting for Obama [ ] ?????. [ ] Any mullah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his (R) heart.

I'm Just Bitter Enough
that if Obama gets caught illegally spying on Americans, my reaction is not going to be "Bush did it, too", it's going to be "impeach the mother fucker." Because if they think I'm giving Democrats a pass just because they gave Republicans one, then they have no idea how bitter I am. Accountability has to start somewhere. If they don't want it to start with Bush, that's unfortunate and I think a mistake, but it's not going to keep me from trying to start it with Obama. If Obama gets a blowjob, I'll defend him. But any political crime should be met with political accountability.
"Do what you feel in your heart to be right -- for you'll be criticized anyway. You'll be damned if you do, and damned if you don't. " - Eleanor Roosevelt
Accountability? Are you high?
Seriously, after the crap they pulled at RBC, racism charges, RFK smears, the whole WWTSBQ
? and the handling of the convention roll call do you think these people are accountable to anyone? Nope. The evilness of McCain/Palin prevents accountability since we are all mostly running along with it. Rather than trying to hold Obama's foot to the fire and get him to stake out a concrete philosophy, everyone jumped to his side which allowed him to capitulate over and over again. I don't blame Obama anymore--he's a power hungry politician. I blame us. f he does spy on us illegally, I blame us because we emboldened him.
Where did "edit" go?
Talk about dependence!
Maybe Obama really believes this post-partisanship stuff
Dogwhistling Social Security, using GOP language to attack mandated UHC (which is part and parcel of the "choice" argument the right uses generally), FISA capitulation, trying to out GOP the GOP when it comes to pandering to religious entities, etc.
At what point do you step back and say, "hey, maybe this is Obama's governing philosophy." Maybe he does believe that the non-philosophy philosophy of Broderism is the key to all our problems. Maybe that's how he'll govern, constantly capitulating.
What part of "Obama's a Republican" do some of us not want to
face?
"You'd better get this straight. Wise up before it's too late." -- Sister Sledge
JFK has been shot, we miss him a lot
He always knew what to do
-- Philly Cream
I'm surprised he hasn't been making that charge, yet.
If McCain were to do that he'd inflict some major damage on the Obama campaign, and it's been waiting for him for months, now.
But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
