Every picture tells a story

There's something about that Barack Obama logo.

I couldn't put my finger on it.

It beckoned to me, inviting the intuitive right side of my brain into its Oprahlicious, Obamariffic "O."

Finally, I turned to my linear half and asked, "what does this literally mean?"

And now that I really see it — have my whole head and heart wrapped around it — it's beautiful, a picture worth three transformative words: "Morning in America!"

I get more of a "Walk into the light!" vibe

You know, like the old rule of thumb: If lost in the woods, go towards the water. If lost in the spiritual plane, go towards the light.

Also the advice given to the dying....

Of course the problem with going towards a light that bright is that it blinds you and you can't make out any details of what the light is lighting up. You have to go forward on faith, as it were.

I see the attractiveness of it, mind you. I just find it resistable.

Train Dreck

When you go towards the light beware, it main be a train coming at you. I guess many find a train wreck irresistible.

it's also an attempted dog whistle at women voters

remember that ad campaign for overstock dot com, "it's all about the O"?

what that REALLY meant was THE BIG O, a.k.a. Orgasm.

in other words, "if you can't make me come, i don't want to know you".

"Obama '08. It's all about the O.

he'll make you coooommmme."

what could possibly be a more powerful appeal than that? save a well-reasoned intellectual one, of course.

do women generally fall for this kind of ad agency bullshit? no more than men do. 9/10ths of advertising pitched at men is sexual in nature. but you have to be careful, because heterosexual men don't want to publicly admit to a desire to be topped, or seduced by an authority figure, even if they are feeling it. [bill clinton's success in politics had to have some man-crush factor, but it was mainly subversive.]

and i think the majority of men prefer not to think of hillary that way. as for thinking of obama that way - well, he IS pretty good looking.

that counts for way, way more than any of us would like to admit.

If you only knew

The rising of a new world order . . .

Yeah when I saw his logo, I was like holy shit!

There is nothing more imperial than a rising sun. The swastika, the British Empire, The Japanese empire, Rome's eagle. The great Aten. Apollo.

It is kind of cool. I'll give Barry this. He's got swagger.

While I like your analysis

when I first saw it my initial reaction was it's the Pepsi logo. "Morning in America" was my second reaction.

do women generally fall for this kind of ad agency bullshit?

No, although I only speak for myself. Nor do I think Obama is good looking.

I think this guy is good looking.

Oh No

And I almost forgot Reagan and thought that picture represents sundown.

You could also read this is "The Big Owe"

Meaning, we'll be paying for this for a long, long time.

Often the way, when the morning after the night before arrives, eh?

It's always Morning In America

Ask Jimmy Carter what happens to anyone who dares suggest otherwise.

...for the rest of us

Lmao, some women will go to

Lmao, some women will go to any lengths to pretend that the queen of the iraq war and the champion of the bankruptcy bill is more Progressive than Barack OBama.

guess 2nd wave feminism is alive and well. I can't believe I ever actually listened to what the people here had to say.

I don't have that problem

Lmao, some women will go to any lengths to pretend that the queen of the iraq war and the champion of the bankruptcy bill is more Progressive than Barack OBama.

Since I consider Clinton and Obama to be conservatives, I don't have that problem.

...for the rest of us

Morning in America

I didn't think that, originally, but then, I haven't even encountered the logo before -- perhaps subliminially, but never actually looking at it.

But independently I did realize, several days ago, that Barack Obama does represent "morning in America." Yes, it was Reagan's slimy slogan, but since Reagan didn't really mean it, the slogan hasn't really lost its luster. Think about it. Hitler, Stalin, Bush, they have all promised "freedom." But the fact that they didn't give it, or maintain it, or protect it, doesn't mean that "freedom" is a useless word.

It's the same with "Morning in America." Of course, it's not the thing to actually say that, but it's perfectly all right to invoke it through a logo. We want the long night of desperation, fear, injustice, and sleaze to end, so a candidate that invokes this image should not be castigated for it. If the image is too obvious, it will fail. If not, it will succeed. If it is patently a band-aid on a campaign with other ends -- for instance, if McCain started promising "morning in America" -- then it will fail spectacularly, and the hypocrisy will be evident. If the image and its implies slogan fits with the campaign, it will not indicate hypocrisy.

And if it also implies "the Big O" -- though I thought that phrase was so old it wouldn't have been considered effective these days -- so much the better.

So, yes, bring on the dawn. It cannot come too soon for me!

Hillary on Social Security and universal health care

I'm with Dr. S on two conservative candidates.

However, in terms of policy:

On both Social Security and universal health care, HRC's superior to OHB; on the first, because HRC's not sending dog whistles to the Obama Fan Base and Moody's about privatization; on the second, because Obama's plan isn't universal, and he painted himself into a corner in terms of fixing his broken plan with his Harry & Louise ad.

Of course, it's true that Hillary isn't promising ponies again in America. To me, that's to her credit.

No doubt the repubs will see that

as a rising sun. Proof positive that the "Fascist Left" is taking over. Jonah will be so pleased.

But I wanted a Ponuppy so bad!

Damn you Lambert, why did you remind me that Hillary isn't promising ponuppies upon getting elected.

"A pony in every garage and one big turkey in office"

wev. he’s not raygun. i

wev. he's not raygun.

i thought it was a nice artistic derivation from the Illinois Green Party's gubenatorial challenge last year.. only it looks like maybe he's got beans in this season..
