Federal judge says "inherent authority" means "King George"

Sweet Jeebus, did AP bury the lede on this one. At a Judiciary Commmittee hearing today:

"I am very wary of inherent authority" claimed by presidents, testified U.S. Magistrate [and FISA] Judge Allan Kornblum. "It sounds very much like King George."

Sounds like? It is! That was the lede, seven, count 'em, seven paragraphs down. There is other stuff:

The judges stressed that they were not offering their views on the NSA operation, which they said they knew nothing about.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., expressed interest in handling legislation on the NSA effort. But the Senate Parliamentarian gave Specter jurisdiction over his bill and DeWine's.

Yeah, it could have been worse. Instead of Spector rewriting the law to legalize Bush's lawbreaking after the fact, when Bush claims he doesn't have to obey the laws anyhow, we could have Roberts burying the whole thing without any hearings at all. Now I feel better. So much better.
