Football death watch
Football is a central ingredient in the American narrative of masculinity, and it’s also the zillion-dollar linchpin of network television. But in case you haven’t heard the news, both those institutions are in crisis. Is it hard to imagine America without football? Yeah, but it’s time to start. It’s a killing game, and we have to let it die.
A bit controversial? Perhaps -- though the author mentions that boxing used to be a mass sport too, along with horse-racing.
And then of course there's the brain damage along with, well, Jerry Sandusky. Yes, I used to watch football and eat popcorn with my father, watching "the game" on our black and white TV. Slow motion was an innovation! But those days are long gone.
