It's obvious, but it has to be said: "Coercion," "alternative procedures," "tough tactics," et cetera, are all euphemisms for torture.
And when you hear these euphemisms used, say in the soothing tones of your Morning Edition announcer, this is what's under disccussion:
Under Republican rule, our country has adopted torture as a policy.
Shameful, shameful, shameful.
Does anybody believe that these policies won't end up blowing back domestically? Just read Michelle Malkin or listen to Rush.
Oh, and NPR helpfully informs me that the famous torture "compromise" nets out this way: Various forms of torture are banned, but they aren't crimes. Unbelievable? All too believable.
UPDATE "Harsh interrogation methods." "Extreme techniques." "Aggressive interrogation techniques."
