Good news!

AP:

AKRON, Ohio - Mortgage finance company Fannie Mae said it is forgiving the mortgage debt of a 90-year-old woman who shot herself in the chest as sheriff's deputies attempted to evict her.

Well, now we know what it takes; too bad about that HOLC thing; it might have given her some hope.

You know -- not to be "mean" or anything -- somehow I've got the feeling that Hank Paulson's not going to be reaching quite that level of desperation any time soon.

Nor will his golfing buddies. Nor will all the "asset managers" who'll be hired straight out of Goldman Sachs to work for the Treasury.

Good news for everybody!

That is just sad

Most of the discussion about things like Social Security, Medicare, and other social programs that affect the poor and elderly leave out the fact that those programs help mostly women and children, especially elderly women whose husbands have died.

Perhaps if that were brought up more, as in saying "What? You don't want to help women and children live decent lives?" more people would grasp just what is being said when the party of white guys wants to cut those programs. (We all know that the Republican party is the party of white guys, don't we?)

They want to take from women and children to fatten their wallets. That's it in a nutshell.

Check out Betty Liu's interview with
Jim Rogers: NOT the end of the world, let 'em go bankrupt!

See what he says, about finances, ignorance and protest votes.

In 1966, every financial firm goes bankrupt in Japan...

Didn't know that.

Betty Liu is priceless, too -- in her tweed jacket! I love her reactions! That's actually one bright spot in the shitstorm, that I've started reading more Bloomberg.

Rogers: "A pox on both their houses. If we keep voting for turkeys, they'll keep sending us turkeys."

Paulson?

Hank Paulson’s not going to be reaching quite that level of desperation any time soon.

You should have seen him the evening after the House voted down the first draft of the $700B bill. Paulson was seen downing cough drops one after another. Had to send one of his aides out to buy another box. Some people were worried. Others thought it was just a calculated move to curry sympathy. It seems to have worked, though. Why else would they have caved like they did?

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.

Random term

Acronym for Known Associate. Usage example:

Bud parked three blocks over, walked up to the squadroom. No Exley, every desk occupied: men talking into phones, taking notes. A giant bulletin boar-d all Nite Owl--paper six inches thick. Two women at a table, a switchboard behind them, a sign by their feet: "R&I/DMV Requests." Bud went over, talked over phone noise. "I'm on the Cathcart check, and I want all you can get me, known associates, the works. This clown was popped twice for statch rape. I want full details on the complainants, plus current addresses. He had three pimping rousts, no convictions, and I want you to check all the local city and county vice squads to see if he's got a file. If he does, I want names on the girls he was running. If you get names, get DOBs and run them back through R&I, DMV, City/County Parole, the Woman's Jail. "Details". You got it?"
