Great moments with the party of ideas

Thank goodness partisanship is off the table. So glad we kept funding the war, legalized warrantless wiretapping, spit on the establishment clause, and kissed Paulson’s ass, so we could win over these fine folks!

Looks like...

... all the smart Republicans have left (see DeLong's "class of" formulation) many of them having become Democrats.

If anybody wants an answer to what's new and different this year, this missing superego would be one good place to start looking. As opposed to, say, Ted Nugent videos.

This campaign certainly did remind us of how many...

A-listers, such as Kos and Huff and Cole, were former Repubs. They've brought such honor to our side!

Maybe I'm wrong, or probably

But I think Senator Obama ushered in this level of nuttiness when he unleashed his 'obamanuts' and their fervor for craziness against a fellow Democrat. I think his supporters have perpetrated this kind of 'discourse'.

His campaign in large part has been crazy wing nuts. And it is playing out in the general, such as bigotry, misogyny, ageism, anti-small towns, sexism etc.

Hey, I have to admit, I don't like the current 'D'(who will not admit to being a 'D'), but I really think this level of craziness is his acceptance of 'no holds barred'.

vastleft's picture

I'm not sure I'd blame Obama for this.

These people sound like major assholes, and they probably were so before he ran his campaign.

I'm sure his "culture-war" fueled messianic-hipster campaign didn't help, though.

And if nothing else, seeing this red-meat drooling makes a proper mockery of his pathetic attempts of singing Kumbaya with the GOP base, as if it were healthy to compromise with bigots.

lambert's picture

No, neither would I

The superego of the Republican party left the sinking ship and either went bipartisan or became Democrats. (Except for the really principled ones, like Bruce Fein or Ron Paul.)

One of my regrets over the last few thousand posts is contributing to a D vs R mindset, as if the Rs had a monopoly on evil, as if the boundaries between the two weren't fluid, and as if the two weren't really part of a single systemic whole. A failure of analysis on my part.

Obviously, the Rs don't have a monopoly on evil -- although they've had a lot more practice at it than the Ds, a consequence of having held power for so long.

Yes VL

I agree. But, I have seen the same level of craziness in the Dem primary, of which I see here. And I know it is not all Obama's fault, but I perceive the same kind of behavior playing out. I know the Repubs have the same crazy elements.

lambert's picture

It's the same kind of behavior...

... but not nearly as ingrained or practiced or reflexive.

That's why it's important to call bullshit on it now. Read your Federalist Papers if you think that one party is composed of angels while the other is not.

Now with added provenance!

The video Vastleft posted is from a Palin rally in Johnstown, PA and as the trailer says, produced by keystoneprogress.org a Progressive activist blog dedicated in part to documenting and battling against hate crime in Pennsylvania. This one, from another Palin rally in Bethlehem, PA that was dismissed earlier as lacking provenance, can be viewed at the site run by the videographer himself; one Michael Morrill. He seems an affable sort and surely would be willing to respond to inquiries concerning his honor and truthfulness.

These two vids serve as documentation that, in spite of claims by local residents, Western PA is still a hotbed of prejudice and bigotry. Good to get that cleared up.

And in further commentary, VL, no one including me or surely anyone in the Obama campaign ever envisioned or, speaking for myself, desired to “win over these fine folks”. Do you have any evidence for that claim, or was it just another empty and false allegation? I ask not because I expect to “win you over” but only in the interest of maintaining a clear documentation of claims – the critical importance of provenance, and all that.

Oh, and: Anyone willing to take bets on how many Ted Nugent fans were in those lines? I’ll take the over-50% position, and offer 2:1.

VL only posted an egregious video of GOP crazies. I was the one who might have been wrong in associating it with Obama's ugly primary campaign.

Bovine

You're looking at the benefits of a 3rd grade education here, my friends: plain and simple ignorance, fueled by manipulative hate-mongering. And somehow we should consider pinning this on Obama's "ugly primary campaign?" Come on. Stop trying to be so goddamn reasonable, balanced, fair and nuanced. You can take a thing too far, fer chrissake.

They're a bunch of assholes. End of story.

Bottom-of-the-Barrel

These are the bottom-of-the-barrel. The same kinds of fools that believed the WV GOP when they put out pamphlets saying that Kerry planned to ban the Bible, the same kinds of intolerants who paralyzed Wichita back in 1991, and it is great to see them becoming less and less a factor. Some of the comments on the video are so stupid it's unbelievable. Watching the guy yell random Arabic names was priceless. Most of the stuff said was so non-sensical you almost have to question whether the folks that say it have the gaul to believe what they are saying.

No, Obama did not incite this, though, he obviously benefits from its continuation and his fundamentalist fans fanning in the flames. If he's good at nothing else it's exploiting his negatives or precieved negatives for his own advantage.

BTW, does anyone ever bother going to an Obama rally or McCain/Palin protest and provoking answers from those attendees?

The irony in all of this is that these folks are so far away from how McCain views things it's not even funny. Bush was always good at harnessing this irrational hatred and fear. McCain is visibly uncomfortable with this shit.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...

vastleft's picture

Uncomfortable or not

McCain has repeatedly sold his soul to endear himself to the GOP base. And so has Obama, for that matter.
