The Guardian's Ewen MacAskill:
Hillary Clinton to accept Obama's offer of secretary of state job
Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned.
Obama's advisers have begun looking into Bill Clinton's foundation, which distributes millions of dollars to Africa to help with development, to ensure that there is no conflict of interest. But Democrats do not believe that the vetting is likely to be a problem.
Take "the Guardian has learned" for what it's worth...
I only hope it's true, so I can savor the intra-cranial splatterfest in the Obama Fan Base.
UPDATE WKJM
mutters solemnly about sourcing. As BTD points out, that's rich.
UPDATE Anglachel writes:
If you liked this post, buy the author some books. The reason I'd be inclined to believe this report despite the lack of sources is the Sidney Blumenthal connection.

My Breaking Point
If this turns out to be true, than this is where I totally split paths with her. I'll wish her luck, but that'll be it. I've got my own interests to look out for, and they don't include her inside of anyone's administration. If she wishes to follow someone else's policy more than she wishes to make her own on our behalf, so be it. I'm done.
Apart from that, please do remember that the OFB
gets the last laugh when their leader is the president and has the Democratic Party by the balls. As long as this is the case they will always have the last laugh. Always. I will gain no pleasure out of seeing a very temporary OFB freak-out, because all that matters is that Obama has neutralized here. She is his, now, for the rest of her political life.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
Oh, dear.
Who would be my Senator now? Rumour has it, Nydia Velázquez , who has been much better than one could have expected, but... still...

Bad Idea
And I say that as someone who is only marginally a member of the Obama fanclub. She's weak on foreign affairs, and even if she knew the subject backwards and forwards, she still would do ten times more good staying in the Senate. I do sorta like the idea of putting her on the Supreme Court, if only because it would mean the wingnuts would be frothing impotently for the next twenty-odd years.
Mortals never discard a Ring of Power once they use it...
Barry O, the Clintonista, and the DINOcrats think they own the Power now; in reality, it owns them.
And it will discard them too once it finds a better host.

If this is accurate, Christopher Hitchens will be aghast, but
glad to be back on cable ragging on the Clintons.
He was on Tweety's show tonight--I didn't hang around. Too disgusting.

Objective and of sound mind as always.
I want Hillary
.. in the Senate!
[Poor NYS constituent begs.]
Think about it, HRC. And I bet you will. I want you in the Senate. But, WEV.
Wev. I support you. For good and for always.

I am become quite OK with thought of HRC as SOS.
I think she'll be great, notwithstanding her endorsement by Kyl and war criminal Kissinger.
I was wondering why she and Bill were campaigning so hard for Obama.
I'd say them polly-tishuns struck some kinda deal way back when.
Might really be a much more powerful position for her than VP. Just sayin'.

Hillary Clinton is to Barack Obama
as Colin Powell and Condi Rice are to George W. Bush.
If that doesn't bring a tear to your eye, there's absolutely something wrong with you.
Has The Onion written a piece yet called
"White woman given nation's worst job"?
Not so-Not like Powell and Rice at all
Much has been written revealing how Powell barely even ever had the President's ear, and he bit his tongue so hard during the run up to the war that cunnilingus became anatomically impossible. His con job at the UN, for which he was totally set up, showed exactly how little respect they had for him in that administration and precisely how they intended for him to function all along. Rice played the fool as the NSA and then worked for a by-then world acknowledged miscreant and fool as the SOS. The only time the red carpet was rolled out for her was when she was leaving. And she once publicly even referred to him as her husband. What a sad joke.
On a level playing field, Clinton defeated Obama. Yet she came out and campaigned and fundraised for him more than any other person. The only same and intelligent response that Obama could have would have to be both respect and appreciation. She would be someone he could trust, both to get the job done and to be on her team. Unlike both Powell and Rice, she's her boss's peer; and contrary to Obama's specious claims during the primary, she knows a hell of lot more than he does about world affairs. Her advice and counsel would be closely attended. And unlike Powell and Rice, she will be effective and profoundly respected wherever in the world she goes as his representative.
And to those who bemoan her leaving the Senate, reading Anglechel's illuminating post clearly explaining how Clinton's lack of seniority would limit her influence for at least a decade. As SOS, she can be of far greater service to this country in these extraordinarily perilous times than as a junior Senator combating scores of egos that would seek to limit her recognition and achievements.
And finally, it would do my heart good to see both Kerry's and Richardson's pompous balls ground to dust after they each thought they were getting the SOS job in return for their endorsements. Them's politics, ya know?
I read
Anglachel's post on this the other day, which supported Hillary taking the position. Today she writes this:
Ignoring the specious scandal-mongering of the last part of the article, what the report says is that the decision of acceptance is based on conditions being met. That's serious and negotiations can fall apart for politically legitimate reasons. HRC will request a significant degree of power and autonomy to accept the obligations and burdens of the office because that is how she does things. You can approve of this or not, but that is part of her character. Is what she requests reasonable? Whether reasonable or not, will it be acceptable? There are balance of power issues that are not just personality conflicts (the tedious crap The Village
and Blogger Boyz roll in like dogs with a rotting carcass) but involve questions of authority and state interests that matter when dealing with other sovereign states.
She's not a military guy - she's no Colin Powell who obeys orders despite his disagreement with them. She's her own person. I hope the same will be said of all of Obama's appointments.
It's got to be about excellence. He's got to put the very best people in these positions and let them do their jobs. I guess that means republicans, too. We're not going to get there by risk avoidance.
Well, as I've said all along, this is going to be interesting.
I'd be a lot happier if we'd see some accountability for the last eight years. Huge mistake to let it go.
I'm Torn on Clinton @ State
On the one hand, I’m not a huge fan of her foreign policy. I supported her primarily because of her domestic policy and that she at least had more experience than Obama. She’s not worse than the Village
, but she mirrors the Village on most issues (so does Obama). And what I think we need is someone who doesn’t do that. However, I recognize that such person is never going to be considered for President or SOS. At least with Clinton, we’ll get a focus on women’s rights so that’s an improvement over some.
And that brings me to the other hand….
Suck it, Zbignew

not gonna happen
all the Obama people are pushing the "Bill/Foundation foreign money stuff" very very hard, and the Guardian story is still the only one that says it's hers for sure.
All this just distracts the media from all the other transition, appointments, and vetting (or not) going on. They fed the "we're vetting her" stuff out on purpose, knowing that it'd be all they talked about for a week or more.
Ah, yes, the magician's beautiful assistant distracting us--
So, what is the magician deflecting our attention from??
It's the summer all over again
Any time Obama drooped in the polls, or whispers of criticism were on the wind, the Obama camp would ramp up some CDS to get the obots not only distracted but slavering with rage at Clinton.
The Pavlovian conditioning is so complete that they now don't even need to accuse Clinton of a sin/monstrous act of evil. They just need to direct attention at her.
I don't want Clinton as SoS. I'd rather have her championing multiple issues in Congress. I understand and somewhat agree with the arguments about seniority in Congress, but don't find them dispositive. If she can still push for my legislative priorities while running a full on presidential campaign (her own and then Obamas, plus downtickets), she can overcome the seniority deficit. I want Kerry out of Mass.
On that last, the one small mean gladness about taking SoS would be that Kerry wouldn't get it, though. That falls in the category of small consolation, though.
Because the problem is not that we have too little condescension from our tribe. -- okanogen
If she takes SoS, and I pray she does not for NY's sake,
she's got one SoS as her wingman, and that is Madame Secretary Madeline Albright, who was at her side during this campaign and who never wavered in her support for her.
For good or for ill, A Clinton State Department will most likely be an Albright-like State -- and considering how State's hemorraging during this Administration, that might be a good thing.
