It truly sickens me the way Republicans can spend a lifetime of running our country into the ground, go on Sunday morning TV, make a few nice sounds and presto, he's cabinet material.
The latest from Steve Clemons: Chuck Hagel Will Help Obama Find his "Inner Nixon".
Clemons says this like it was a good thing. Yeah, the secret bombing of Cambodia, the destruction of Chilean democracy, and so many other things were such a good idea and worked out so well for our country.
Not only did Hagel vote for the original Iraq War Authorization Resolution, he also voted for torture. I don't think it is ideological purity to ask that members of the cabinet be anti-torture. I also want to ask serious people like Clemons what is the difference between Lindy England and pro-torture Senators. In fact, I would like Clemons to explain to the rest of us why we should take him seriously if he will not oppose the use of torture. Can we set the bar any lower?
I'm with Avedon Carol:
Meanwhile, for many talk has turned heavily to choosing Obama's VP, and the consensus seems to be that he needs a nice tough war hero with a woman-hating record to "balance" the ticket. Or that's what it sounds like to me. Favorites seem to be Jim Webb and other woman-unfriendly types, including right-wing Republican Chuck Hagel. Y'know, this is the kind of thing that makes a lot of women wonder if this whole anti-Clinton thing really is about a desire to throw women under a bus. Yeah, yeah, I know, it's not "women", it's this woman - I've heard that. And I believe that's true for the people who are just as outraged as I am about the suggestion of people like Bayh and Hagel and Webb for VP. But tell me you want Chuck Hagel on the Democratic ticket and I'm inclined to suspect this is just about conservative Republicans trying to take over what's left of the Democratic Party.

Taking over the Dems
Pols and pundits know a sinking ship when they see one, hence Hagel, Volcker and Kmiec. The screwed up the GOP, why not jump on board and screw the Democratic party too. That's why I like Lambert's FKD (formerly knows as Democratic) formulation. It sums it up perfectly.
Seeing as how Obama was appointed, not nominated,
they've done a fine job of it.

Hagel?!
Jesus Christ!
All I have to comfort myself, and it's a bare thread, is: the shit will hit the fan and it'll be spread all over the new administration. The financial crisis and failed bailout won't give them much breathing room with the public.
I agree with GQM: the media is a parasite and they're going to do to the Democratic Party what they they did to the GOP (Mind you, corporate interests have already wreaked havoc on the Democratic Party, making them energetic, Republican enablers). Obama will not disappoint the media, which only spells disaster for the country.
Wasn't Hagel's Name Mentioned...
...pretty early on as a dark horse VP pick for Obama? They are going to force him somewhere into this picture.
Yes, many Republicans are jumping their own ship knowing where their current course is taking them only to force them onto the Democratic ship of which they'll also foul. All of these GOP turncoats aren't at all ideologically disgusted with their party's policies; they are simply looking for a new meal ticket, and Obama is more than happy to oblige them.
Something in the water...
Clemons on Powell:
Yeah, if Obama needs somebody to hold up a vial of white powder, Powell's definitely the man for the job.
What is it in the Village water supply, anyhow?
[ ] Very tepidly voting for Obama [ ] ?????. [ ] Any mullah-sucking billionaire-teabagging torture-loving pus-encrusted spawn of Cthulhu, bless his (R) heart.

Well, Obama would know Powell doesn't resign on principle...
so, maybe, he's his kind of appointee.
Do we have a handle on what people Obama will be appointing? Usually close advisers make it into the WH and/or Cabinet.
Any lists of likely appointees?
so far, Republicans are who he talks about all the time--
--like Lugar and Hagel and current Bush people in office--and his whole staff is Chicago people.
It's Been Amazing
To see how quickly so-called liberals abandoned real liberals when it comes to talking about Obama. I remember when there was the whole hub-bub about whether Powell had endorsed Obama or not I saw liberals seriously praising how good of a vice presidential pick Powell would be. The whole year has been the "Year of the WTF
?" if you ask me.
Steve Clemons was early and enthusiastic supporter of the Iraq
Invasion, right? Came rather late to the realization it sucked big time?
He's a Villager insider (outer orbit, perhaps, but still a Villager).
This Tom Dispatch piece suggests that Gates might be a holdover
in an Obama administration. Goes into his plans for the new military (everything's bigger except the Air Force). LINK.
And that's just the intro to an essay by Aziz Huq, who asks "Do empires end with a bang, a whimper, or the sibilant hiss of financial deflation?"
Hiss looks likely. He posits that our fiscal breakdown, caused by the hubris of the Big Banker Boiz, will indeed cause a breakdown in most aspects of our inernational relations.
Thank you, George and Dick, BushCo, Inc. This time, George, even Poppy's rich friends will probably not be able to fix the problems you caused. Enjoy your corner of Paraguay.
yup--he's keeping Gates--
and i'm willing to bet everything i own that he keeps all the current Generals on too.
and even if he wanted to get rid of Paulson and others, the media won't let him if they're connected to any ongoing "crisis".
