Ok.
I've been reading the phrase "hard as nails" a lot lately. Pretty much I haven't really given it a lot of thought until yesterday, when I was in the bath and noticed how long my toenails were getting. This may seem funny to you, to some a bit gross (who wants to read about toenails ewwww!), I digress. Ok, so I was taking a bath....nice sudsy bubbly one with eucalyptus and bathsalts so I was feeling kinda special, when up from the bubbles pops my big toe and this enormagamous toenail. Eyes wide I ripped grasped my toe and worked at the edges a bit until I ripped the offensive bit off. Well that was easy...so I shifted my position and reached under the suds and began playing with my other toenail. Eventually I had to pop my foot up to the surface where I examined the nail. Shor`nuf a that nail had become hard so hard that it appeared to ball up a protein fist and shake it right in my face.
Straightening my back, I attacked the nail with steely determination. I now have no thumb nails....mmmm well heck this wasn't easy. So I grabbed a shaver (when one is in the throes of determined "rip that nail" mode, the brain tends to wander from the premises. Well nope that shaver didn't work so I reached in for the emergency shaver. The one you use only if all other razors are no longer working. Yep a bic. Ok, and I angled it near my toenail and fidgeted the end. No success. By now I was bleeding, the water was cold and the bubbles having run for cover drowned.
Holy moly, I wound up using scissors that I found next to the tub in a set of drawers.
My poor toe was pretty much the worse for the toenail attack and showed signs of possible blod clotting.
Tonight I read a blog from a woman who was admiring some of the other posters who were still slugging it out for McCain. She called them "hard as nails" , which led to several posts on how she was "hard as nails " too.
The deal is this. When did my toenails start getting so hard? Are they going to eventually be like my grandma's and my dads? I thought that all this 21st century stuff was supposed to keep that from happening. I thought this was something that the previous generations could get.
And criminy, if we are talking about who is "hard as nails" think of how old McCain is and how tough his toenails probably are. I bet in a barefoot kicking match he would win toenails up.

It's thickening in the Keratin. Soak in warm water
and get yourself a pair of serious toenail clippers.
Sigh -- another reason you know you're not a kid anymore.
When you're a kid you NEED thick toenails.

i've noticed my nails have gotten thicker too as i age--weird (and gross if they become old man nails--all yellow and stuff)
Nails and aging
Amber, it's not just aging but there are plenty of diseases and syndromes that can alter the appearance of our toenails. [Gee, can't imagine how I know this. ;-o]
This is a great resource with pictures for those concerned about changing appearance of toe & fingernails. [Warning: real life--not for the feint of heart!]
applies glue
mmmpf
Takes out elmers glue and squeezes all over that.
Looks around and replies to blogger:
"couldn't find the reference you sent me too, I still think hard as nails is about thick toenails."
Sincerely,
j.

yes you are getting old
We will all get the gross old toenails, but when you get some clippers (how have you coped without?) you can keep them short. Also, get one of those nail-file looking things in the drugstore that has nail buffing surfaces on it too--it's usually a two or four surface implement. If you buff away the ridges on your nails they won't look as bad and they won't break in the middle.
is it true that white spots on fingernails are from
not enough calcium? (or something like that)
I guess thicker toenails is like the ear and nose hair--all gross getting old things.

you know what's weird about toenails tho?
we should really have them on the soles of our feet, like hoofs or something--our feet are so soft and could use far more protection and stability, no?
it's really obvious (to me at least) that we evolved from non-walking/running animals.
ok the link to the nails is just....
Ok now that link is just making me kinda nuts. (I have now diagnosed myself with no less than all of these potentially toenail threatening diseases--even if I have no signs of anything other than yellow and now neatly trimmed thankyouverymuch) I have toe clippers they were in the bedroom though lol. I just had it in my head "emergency, Houston!" and wanted it taken care of THEN.
