Harry Krishna, or Dirty Harry?

On confirming Abu G's replacement:

Are we going to get the kumbaya-singing, navel-gazing Harry Reid who managed to pass the Republican FISA bill gutting the Constitution, or are we going to get the Harry Reid who didn't compromise or triangulate on Social Security, and who schooled Bil Frist in the dark arts of Senatorial leadership?*

Harry Krishna, or Dirty Harry?

Time will tell. Doveryai no proveryai:

"Ted Theodore** Olson will not be confirmed," Reid, D-Nev., said in a written statement. "I intend to do everything I can to prevent him from being confirmed as the next attorney general."

Winning "bruising confirmation battle" would juice the Dems up some, no question.

A man can dream, right?

Though I think every confirmation battle should be bruising. There's no shame in being "obstructionist" when you're dealing with crooks--unless you're a crook yourself, that is.

That's what Dirty Harry would say, anyhow.

NOTE * Remember when Frist was Presidential timber? I think we can give Harry Reid some credit for giving Frist every opportunity to show the country what a light-weight he was.

NOTE ** As I saw somewhere in my travels today, "Ted" humanizes the man. Let's not do that.

Olson is so clearly objectionable

Olson is so clearly objectionable it may be that by speaking out now Reid is baiting Bush, trying to goad him into nominating Olson so the Dems can win at least one fight. Not that Bush is ever anything other than confrontational but apparently there is some thinking it over going on in the White House since the rest of the short list have already said no.

BTW, not that it matters but the spelling Olson is most likely Norwegian (Ole's son)rather than Finnish, particularly with his middle name of Bevry.

I would like to think Reid is acting out of principle

But my spider senses tell me otherwise - this is personal. Reid is too angry.

Remember that whole no recess appointments "deal" he made with Bush? I think he knew Gonzales was stepping down - Bush gave him that for his capitulation.

But Bush knew Gonzales was gone anyway (kind of like saying you are withdrawing 30,000 troops when they're coming home anyway).

So Reid told Bush, "No fair recess appointing a replacement cretin, say like Olson."

Bush looks him in the eye and says "Oh, no, I'll pick someone who you can build consensus around."

Reid thinks "The hell you will" and demands a no-recess-appointment promise.

Bush thinks "I'm going to do whatever the fuck I want and no two-bit Democrat Senator is going to tell me who I can and cannot nominate."

So the Olson nomination is just another in a long line of Bush fuck yous, and Reid is going to shit down his throat.

Promises from George Bush

aren't worth anything even if you get it in writing. The quid pro quo was I thought no recess appointments for letting the Senate have the recesses, which seemed pretty slick since the Dems wanted recess regardless. Can’t imagine Bush gave away the right to choose nominees, and who would believe him on that anyway? The man’s a liar.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
