Chinless wonder Fred Hiatt gives George McGovern space on his Op-Ed page to boost Medicare for All, which McGovern does, while gently musing on the possible effect of campaign contributions from health insurnace companies. Well and good, but in Versailles
, McGovern is the epitome of the unserious. Meanwhile, Broder lovingly fondles the transcript of The Latest Greatest Speech EVAH, concluding -- and I know this will surprise you -- that Obama's ducking the central issue of "entitlement reform." And Frank Rich sets the stage for the next act: The meta-compromise on public option.

iy was only one line in the campaign platform!
Public Option, we hardly knew ye.
I had the same reaction
of all the single payer advocates they chose the one who is the most politically discredited.
nobody
under 45 really knows anything knows much about McGovern.
Unless they've read their Hunter S. Thompson.
I read Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail last year, when I was still on an elections kick. It's become one of my favorite books.
And McGovern comes off quite well in it- really, the most sympathetic character there.

thanks
for the book recc.
Oh, by all means.
Everyone should read Hunter S. Thompson. You know Matt Taibbi? When he writes his polemics he's basically channeling Thompson. It's called 'Gonzo journalism.'
Thompson's perspective on politics is essential for a good liberal, and it's actually become even more relevant in the past decade.

Yes
that ol' entitlement reform thingy.
Maybe Obama can sacrifice Social Security to show Broder and conservatives everywhere that he's a great guy.
Well, at least someone made FP space for it.
Of course, Daily Kos, par for the course, completely ignored it.
The liberty of democracy is not safe if people tolerate growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism.---FDR
I get tired of the genuflection to Versailles
even as snark.
Maybe the DC statehood folks ought to get their way.
Then there'd be plenty of insider-trading crap for the punditocracy to yammer on about without having time to inflict their stupidity on the rest of us.
