Here's why Bush nominated Mukasey: No special prosecutor

lambert's picture

Froomkin quotes this gem from Spiky:

Writes Isikoff: "According to three sources, who asked not to be named discussing the private meetings, Mukasey said that he saw 'significant problems' with shutting down Guant¿namo Bay and that he understood the need for the CIA to use some 'enhanced' interrogation techniques against Qaeda suspects. Mukasey also signaled reluctance with naming a special prosecutor to investigate Bush-administration misconduct, according to one participant.

And now comes Spiky's world-class, totally mindblowing scoop; buried, of course:

'Gosh, I'm a little worried that the Democrats might have problems with him,' said one well-connected conservative after being briefed on Mukasey's responses."

Ohmygawd! Stop the presses! Sweetheart, get me rewrite! Republicans are capable of irony!

NOTE That word "Gosh" is what we call a tell. Obviously, the Republicans have nothing to fear from this crowd of Democrats at all. Of course, the Democrat Party could prove me wrong and get their real name back very easily: Hold Mukasey's nomination hostage until Bush complies with all outstanding subpoenas and "requests" for information. I won't be holding my breath. That would be suicidal.

"The Democrat Party"?

Did I miss something? Any particular reason why that hoary old New Deal-era libel is now being used on the pages of a respected progressive blog?

Perhaps Lambert wishes to disparage

the D's. I can't bring myself to type democrat party just yet, but I'm not too far off. Maybe.

Let 'em live up to it and they'll get their name back

I'm assuming that's the idea

Nevertheless, I think we need to come up with our own insults instead of borrowing them from the wingers. Especially borrowing one that was originally intended to disparage a man who did his best to embody everything that progressive government should be about.

Lambert - any way to update the link over to the source? - Thanks.

Killin' me that it's taking so long (and I'm so swamped) to get the Mukasey reads done... ARGH!

And, great point Vikki and Lambert - I usually get so pissed when people drop the "ic" -- your wisdom could save me years on my hypertensive life!!!

I call 'em "Dumbo-craps"

Cuz they faithfully follow along behind the pachyderm Pukes and wallow in their shit.

I'd also endorse "Suckocrats" and "Gutless-Punk-ocrats."

In any case, they've proven themselves to be a wholly useless and feckless buncha wussies.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
