The mantra of "change from the bottom up" was something that Obama regularly mentioned in his campaign speeches. It is difficult to connect that hopeful vision to Susan Collins and Ben Nelson re-writing the stimulus package against the wishes of the population at large. This is especially the case given that Obama's grassroots network is being asked to politely sit on their hands and ask Tim Kaine a few questions about the bill, rather than to take meaningful action. I really want to help pass the stimulus package at its current size, but I honestly don't know how to do that right now. It is very frustrating when you want to help, but you don't even know if that help is wanted, or exactly how you could help even if it was wanted. If President Obama would let us know which side he was on--the center-right Senate coalition's or the Democratic congressional leadership's--and urged people to take specific actions to help that side, everything would be a lot clearer.
It's not clear now?

He Reaps the Whirlwind!
Obama had better be careful. If he continues to alienate and abuse his mighty online supporters, he is reaping the whirlwind. Or a dust devil. Depending.

Better bookmark Obama's "dust off your shoulder" YouTube moment
I have a feeling that URL will come in handy in the coming years as all these yapping fauxgressives promise that there will be hell (HELL, I say!) to pay for defying them.
Better yet, the darkened Obama photo or RFK
The perpetuation and the lack of universal and strong repudiation demonstrate that these bozos shouldn't be taken very seriously. Despite a few commenters here and there, the birth certificate thing died promptly when exposed, even on the site where it originated.

Stupid ass
Sure Open left had a few critical questions for Obama during the primary and GE, but the fact that these questions are coming now says a lot about the seriousness of the proggers when it comes to being a useful political movement, other than electing the candidate du jour.
I have a hard time taking seriously anyone who is just now asking these questions seriously and making these laments. Asking "how are going to get the boulder to the top of the mountain" when the question should have been "why are we pushing the boulder off this cliff" doesn't strike me as coming from someone remotely serious. Those of us asking more of the latter types of questions were ridiculed or brushed aside, even having it said that they brought shame to this blog.

you all really should take it easy on Chris
he's getting shit on all over the place by his Mightly Legion of Progressive Commenters, for not having enough Faith. it's funny, in a sad sort of way. Christ comes closest to "getting it" out a a long list of progressive A-List types. i understand that now is an easy time to mock him, but frankly, Chris isn't the problem. it's all the readers and followers of the blogosphere in general, who don't want to be told things like "stop paying for cable" and "organize a chapter of Code Pink in your 'hood and join a massive protest in front of X" or even "throw a lot of money at an actually progressive primary challenger and do everything you can to publicize them."
Ma and pa
with kids and mortgages and life don't give a flying eff about Chris Bowers or you or anyone in the blogosphere.
See, that's that problem.
I don't know much about what Chris wrote during the primaries
But right now, he's doing a great job playing it straight. If he keeps it up, he's in line for a Square House Award.
+100
And as I recall, Bowers -- and why the fuck isn 't Bowers on that Philly panel, instead of that worthless tool Avarosis -- actually ran for a local office, and won, in Philly. Which I would like to see his detractors doing. Good for him.

gqm: could you clarify?
i don't quite understand your comment nor to whom you're responding. thanks!
I was harsher than I meant to be
Sorry. To be clear, I think Bowers is fighting the good fight. I took what I thought was there in his words, and heightened them. It was a "shorter" riff.

I didn't mean to pick on Chris either
My comment above was more general on the phenomenon. TPM, Huffpo or AmericaBlog would have been more apropos.

Susan Collins and Ben Nelson
But, Susan Collins and Ben Nelson are so nice, and moderate, and bipartisan. I hope it's becoming clear, now, for those that never minded to notice before, that these are the folks who the GOP will use to make their own "change" to everything the Dems propose. Yes, they will use the Blue Dogs, too, like they've always done.
Really, is this any surprise? These are the typ of people that Obama's message was meant to empower. Why does anyone doubt that the Journey to the Center of Mediocracy will continue? It's not a bug; it's a feature. And, where has Reid been in all of this? You've got Ben and Susan nibbling at the edges of the pie for no other reason than to spoil it, if even that's not how they see their involvement in this.

But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
Jim Cooper (D) TN
said today that: " he was encouraged by the Obama administration to fight against some of the bill's more controversial provisions when it was in the House."
"I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but I actually got some quiet encouragement from the Obama folks for what I’m doing," said Cooper, a relatively conservative "Blue Dog" Democrat who opposed the stimulus bill. "They know it's a messy bill and they wanted a clean bill."
But Obama says: "Let's not make the perfect the enemy of the essential," Obama said as Senate Republicans stepped up their criticism of the bill's spending and pressed for additional tax cuts and relief for homeowners. He warned that failure to act quickly "will turn crisis into a catastrophe and guarantee a longer recession."

Notice Obama does not say the Republicans need to vote for THIS bill.
So what's up?

If Obama and Rahm are happy destroying the Democratic and Republican wings of the Democratic Party, then why the heck would they ask for our help in getting the package passed?
"It's not a bug; it's a feature"
I agree. And one of the most frustrating things is that everyone seems on the left blogosphere seem to be operating under the assumption that its a bug. I'll admit, around Feb of 2007 when I heard Obama preach the unity thing as his campaign theme I thought it was a bug. Seeing the behavior during the primary (using right-wing tropes against Hillary's personality, bringing back Harry and Louise, praising Reagan) got me to reevaluate whether it was really just a bug.
