A group of eight protesters from the Iowa Occupation Project and Voices for Creative Nonviolence dropped by the Huckabee campaign headquarters in Des Moines this afternoon to ask that very question.
Three brave people, Mona Shaw, Kathy Kelly and Robert Braam, went inside where they sang Auld Lang Syne and read the names of dead Iraqis and American soldiers.
The response? Somebody called the police, who showed up and dutifully arrested the three when they refused to leave. All peaceful and co-operative, as these things should be. Thirty-five reporters, including several international journalists, were at Huckabee’s office during the protest and witnessed the arrests. No word at this time if it was Huckabee himself who made that decision or his daughter Sarah who runs the office.
A little direct action is a wonderful thing, provides just the sort of publicity a caring Christian man would want. Now if any of them had raped a Clinton cousin or killed a dog, well, things would be different.
Hats off to Robert, Mona and Kathy; may their New Year’s Eve be a happy one. I say three cheers and lift a glass in their direction.

Protestors
Can I have an AMEN?!
Thanks
I very much appreciate the support.
You should know that other members of our contingent, some from the Des Moines Catholic Worker and from Voices for Creative Non-Violence, as well as others, who were just inspired to participate, were essential to the success of this action. There are press releases to create and distribute, personnel logistics, and non-violent trainings to consider prior to the event itself. Most of us were out side of the building making our inside presence known. And, of course, writers, such as here at this blog, that execute the essential task of disseminating the information.
You should also know that this is an on going campaign. Please see this link for details: http://www.desmoinescatholicworker.org/i...
Thanks again.
thank you, R. Braam!
your actions are truly appreciated by those of us not on the campaign trail.
frankly, this needs to happen to all of them, every last one of them. even the ones who have voted against the war. as a group, they need to be pressured to act. as nancy's recent 'get off my lawn' comments show, the thing that grates them most?
actual people actually bothering them.
Kudos to all involved protesting Huckabee
Many, many thanks to all who helped put this protest together. Taking the time to do so, and embracing the not small risk of actually being part of an organized political effort that confronts the powerful, is admirable. That being said, there is a special level of thanks due to those who are willing to walk through the gates of Stony Lonesome for the cause. However confident one might be that the stay will be short, there is a certain sinking feeling as the doors close behind; overcoming that uncertainty deserves notice.
Praise also for choosing to conduct a political protest at the political headquarters rather than at anyone's personal residence. Everyone deserves some level of privacy, somewhere to feel safe and secure - even politicians with whom we disagree.
