From the Horse's Mouth: NO Single-Payer Healthcare in the US

You need to see the whole tape, but the killer comes with about 12 seconds to go.

If you want real health care available to everybody in the US, do not -- I repeat, DO NOT -- let the Senate, Congress, and President think what he says in answer to this question is acceptable. Call. Write. March. Congress is on break -- find your local critter at a barbecue or a town meeting or some other innocuous occasion, and buttonhole the sucker. You want single payer? Make it ABSOLUTELY UNMISTAKABLY CLEAR -- NOTHING LESS WILL DO. OR YOU WILL TAKE AWAY THEIR JOBS.

One sixth of our economy, and it might cause disruption???

I've spent the majority of the last two days in a hospital watching my kid recover from a major surgery. *That* is disruption. Taking the insurance companies out of the healthcare equation isn't disruption. It's STIMULUS.

Best wishes to you and your kid

I'm glad to see you posting (and understandably on fire), and hope your child recovers quickly. That's got to be tough.

We can't afford not to have single-payer!

Thanks, a little night ... the surgery went fine. It's the pain

control that's effed-up. I think I'm headed off to bed. The video I saw (live, this afternoon, from the hospital) posted above just sent me over the edge.

Glad to Hear the Surgery Went Well

Hope they get the pain stuff sorted out. Good thoughts.

it is the new talking point

"we can't upend 1/6 of our economy"
it is Fear Uncertainty and Doubt
the fact that they have switched talking points means that we are getting to them. Keep writing letters to the editor, keep agitating, we can pass this sucker

or failing that, we can at least prevent them from passing anything that make it impossible for the states to pass their own single payer system.

Our whole economy has been upended.

WTF do we have to lose? At least this is a risk that doesn't benefit the banksters or their Swiss accounts.

NOW do you see why Beck's guests are openly calling for an Al Qaeda attack? They need the diversion, dammit....

Same Tactics Bush Used

When in doubt - scare 'em.

Change!

Actually, it's an old talking point

The fact that they're talking about economic disruption means we're finally getting down to brass tacks. Because that's been the only real objection the leadership class has had to single-payer all along.

Insurance companies are just like banks. They don't stick your premiums in a vault and wait for you to get sick to pay the money out. They loan the money out. They're not as an important source of venture capital as they once were, but they're still part of that FIRE tripod that our economy is built upon that's been pretty shaky lately. Had Walmart not received a loan from MassMutual when they were first expanding out of Arkansas, Sam Walton would never have become the world's richest man. When you're driving along and pass the subdivisions, shopping malls, and office parks, the odds are that your health insurance premiums helped build them.

When times are bad as they are now, Congress will be loath to put private insurers out of business. But in good times, they won't want to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Sorry to read about your child

Best of wishes for your child's speedy and complete recovery. Take care of yourself too. I think the notion that the sell-out on health care will not be business as usual in Washington is spreading; we are gaining traction. It is easier to kill something than it is to pass it. So, some on the left's choice to prevent a bad bill is genuinely threatening to the status quo. It's about time.

Brought him home tonight.

We'll see what happens next.
The level of service two nurses and a patient care aide can provide way outnumber the things one mom can do in the same timeframe...if y'all don't hear from me for awhile, nobody panic, okay?
