How many prisoners are in Bush's European gulag?

lambert's picture

I always had the picture that the planes the CIA was using for its "extraordinary renditions" were executive jets. So, we were handing people over to be tortured--or torturing them in the air--in onesies and twos. Heck, that's not so bad.

Think again.

plane

AFP:

A plane suspected of being used by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) departing from Palma de Mallorca airport. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrives in Germany on Monday to start a four-country tour expected to be dogged by questions about reports of secret CIA prison camps and 'torture flights'(AFP/File/Toni Marimon)

So, do the math. How many prisoners does that plane hold? 100? So, given 85 flights, that would make 8500 prisoners.

Enough to fill a decent camp, I'd say.

And certainly a camp large enough to be picked up by satellite photographs.

Meanwhile, Condi's telling the Europeans to back off. Guess that would mean the camps are real, wouldn't it?

Why are Republicans pro-torture?

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
