How many times have the newly empowered Democrats issued subpoenas?

lambert's picture

100 times?

50?

25?

10?

5?

No.

1.

And for a no-brainer, the political firings of the Federal prosecutors.

Please don't tell me the Republicans are co-operating. Because if they are, that means the Democrats aren't causing them any pain.

Honestly, I'd like to have some hope, but for all the issues that I care deeply about--Iraq, restoring Constitutional government, putting a leash on the Christianists, and generally rooting out Republican corruption--the Beltway Dems aren't showing me a thing.

What's wrong with these people?

UPDATE Oops, today the total is now 2. Big fucking deal.

UPDATE Harry, WTF? I'm hoping all this turns out well, but right now I'm feeling less good about Democrats being emboldened to do anything day by day. Fuck the first 100 hours. That was the easy stuff. How about the first 100 days?

is it because the SCLM won't cover them

and therefore there is no political benefit to holding them?

is it because hearings piss off donors, who are often behind the cronies most guilty and deserving of investigation?

is it because the dem leadership is fractured, lacks unity, and ovaries? (no, can't be that last) anyone?

Subpoena-ing is hard work

Takes time. Especially in a target rich environment.

OK, that's bullshit. They're scared.

They also know that if they actually DO something about all the GOP lying/cheating/looting/lawbreaking, the story (oddly) shifts from GOP malfeasance to Dem overreaching. They are surrounded on all sides by GOP teabaggers and enablers in the media, and it has paralyzed some of our less spineful members.

The Dems don't really want the war to end - they see political gold in 2008 if the quagmire is still swamping along. Not to mention all the money their districts would lose if the war machine wasn't chugging along.

There is an institutional inertia that has always been there, compounded by the unwillingness or timidity of Dems to press the advantage (almost like Lincoln's Union forces before Grant and Sherman), made all the more frustrating by this age of instant information and accountability that we live in.

We need to pick very specific battles, prioritize, then really work to provide spine where it matters, then hope they don't lose there nerve when Stephanopolous/Wolf/Russert/Broder/Klein start wagging their fingers.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
