Believe me I’m not surprised. Right now I’m just trying to get out of the way. I was never a fan of the Obama candidacy but, as I travel and listen to people outside the US I realized how crucial this election is. The rest of the world really wants to believe in America. They want to believe the hype, excuse me, I meant the dream. They want to believe in opportunity, equality, justice, freedom … I listen, I smile, and I think, you don’t know shit about America.
The folks up at Stanford ran an http://www.startribune.com/politics/2869... "> AP-Yahoo News poll found that 40 percent of white Americans and one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks.
I have hope, just a little, that Americans will muster up enough strength to at least show the world they are fighting their inglorious past and trying to make amends for the misery they have caused. But, alas, as the last soccer mom hops in her gas guzzling SUV and trucks her latte drinking ass to the mall to get blasted at the local theme bar with her “friends” before its time to pick up Amber and Brad from another one of their overscheduled activities, the Arab world chokes on clouds of depleted uranium, while Africa drowns in rivers of blood courtesy of US militias, Chinese peasants lose their life savings while their government invests their hard earned money in failing US treasuries, and the Russians wait for us to implode.
Far be it from me to think that white America might have a moment of clarity and shake of their addiction to gluttony, denial, and self absorption and decide, just this once, to put foot to ass for the sake of the nation. “I’m not a racist – I’m culturally conservative” is what they say. Or my favorite, I’m not racist but I know people who are.
Guess what? Yes you too.
At least with W, excuse me, president W, I could excuse it as first time stupidity, even the second time. But if white America doesn’t rally the fucking team and protect us from John McCain and the moose hunting, speaking in tongues, shot gun wedding, snow mobile racing, Jack London, arctic tundra, psychopathic beauty queen turned hockey mom – “I can see Russia from my house” WTF
!!?? – we’re fucked.
The rest of the world will have all the evidence they need that America is a lost cause. While Barry may be nothing more than a flash in the pan smile, and resume padding, kiss ass, ladder climber. He, most certainly, is better for this country than the plastic man Manchurian candidate with a Hanoi Hilton twitch and his faithful side kick arctic Barbie. Looking at the data it looks like the fate of the nation is going to come down to the decision of white women. Maybe Obama should get a Dog.

lol this election and every election
...is all white women's fault. Not men, who vote disproportionately republican, not Obama for failing to reach out to whatever voters he needs to form a winning coalition, not anything based in substance or causal events at all, but specifically white women who think emotionally, nay hysterically, and just can't get over their "bitterness," to do the right thing. Facts about white women's support for Obama be damned!
Could we throw out a few more stereotypes to cling too?

I question the conclusions
of the Stanford survey. And I do not believe that the election is so close because we are all a bunch of selfish, over-pampered racists. Obama's lack of a big lead has everything to do with Obama the candidate, not Obama the black man. His base of college students and creative class is not as big a demographic in the electorate as a whole as it was in the Democratic primary.
This Stanford poll is being thrown out there to set up all the name-calling if Obama loses and to make sure nobody has the audacity to lay the blame for defeat on Obama. I do not believe that if Obama was the exact same candidate he is now, only white, that he would be 6 points ahead.
He can win this by becoming an actual Democrat. He can show some leadership on,oh say, the current economic explosion. he can finally tell people how an Obama administration will help them, make their lives better.
And your attack on suburban mothers seems a bit gratuitous.

people suck
not yet, Sarah
I still have hope. It's on life support - but still alive.
The Stanford Study underestimates the problem
Hell, 30% of the black community harbor negative views toward blacks. Still, as a group, they have enough sense to see Obama as a last gasp. What the fuck is wrong with all the rest of you?
Saw that report and started to write it up, RL got in the way and now here is brave Xeno so thanks, My Friend, your black ass on the line instead of my white one. A small study, with some uncertainty in the methodology, but for my money better than anything else that has been done this season and pretty close to the truth. The breadth of sexist bigotry in this country is only slightly greater than the scope of racial bigotry, same as always. Both of them are inexcusable.
Sarah, my dear; deep breath. It is bigotry that sucks, regardless of the source. There's a lot of it going around. Nobody is pointing at you, not at all.
Xeno, my main man; you know I love you. [Places very large, very meaty hand on your shoulder and squeezes just hard enough to cause pain, looking straight into your eyes and not blinking.] Head up: Don't get personal. Methodology
Haven't seen the actual study details, just the overview, but putting some emotional distance in the form of an impersonal computer screen between the interviewer and the respondent cannot but help reduce the well-known tendency of people to deny what they understand to be socially unacceptable feelings and present themselves as better than they are. This isn't I think so much an IAT phenomenon, which is as I grasp it a more general associative dilemma, but perhaps what might best be thought of as an MTMM defensive disconnect. Closely analogous I think to the difficulties of obtaining interviewee openness first explored in depth by Kinsey and Kinsey, based on earlier work in the area of therapeutic self-assessment by Krebs. This isn't rocket science; a couple of drinks and a smile will obtain the same phenomenon in any singles bar on a Friday night.
We have sense to see that one man won't solve the problems?
I'm confused. Is it enough that we vote for him in November, holding our noses, or do we have to see him as the last gasp at life on Planet Earth, too?
Does Nancy "Gift from God" Pelosi make up for her white sisters' sin of, um, existing?
You might be more effective
if you stay on one topic at a time. Your scattershot rag on Democrats, in the face of the all-pervasive obliterating perfidy that is the Republican Party, is starting to wear a bit thin. Either muster a decent argument or drop the nasty but vapid one-liners - or there will be no more Mister Niceguy from me.
Vote Dem in November, straight Party ticket, top to bottom, and do what ever it takes to git 'er done. Hold your nose, swallow hard, stick your thumb up your ass, I don't really care.
Installing a Democratic administration NOW is the last best hope for all humanity, for all human life on Earth; Obama the person is relatively unimportant, merely a happenstance. Diminish your focus on him and try to get a grip on the larger picture.
The whole rest of the world sees this clearly; that Americans do not is both befuddling and deeply embarrassing. Michelle Obama says she has never been prouder to be an American; I have never been more ashamed.

“… 40 percent of all
"... 40 percent of all white Americans hold at least a partly negative view toward blacks ..."
funny, nobody ever asks what percentage of women 'hold at least a partly negative view towards' men, but we're always expected to willingly vote for them anyway.
Why pay a pollster
when you can just hold up your thumb and make a guess?
what percentage of women ’hold at least a partly negative view towards’ men
90%. The rest are under ten.
dude!
my 'partly negative view' appeared waaaaay before that age.
You, dear heart, are what we call

Good point!
I'm thinking that most of the pollsters (read men) don't want to KNOW what the women are thinking.
Interestingly, I took an implicit bias test and found I prefer blacks. I'm white, but have had better experiences with blacks than I have had with whites, especially white men.
So, I'm thinking hard about the black woman, as in McKinney.

on that implcit bias test you took, was it this one? and if so, are you right- or left-handed? i'm just curious, because i'm not convinced the test is well-controlled for handedness.
I’m thinking that most of the pollsters (read men) don’t want to KNOW what the women are thinking.
i'm thinking you're correct here.
as for voting, i've heard from the green party that they'll definitely be on my ballot in nov, so i'll be able to vote for mckinney. alternatively, if there's a write-in space, i'm considering writing in hillary.
Maybe the reason is 50 % of pretty bad is better than 0%
of absolutely wonderful.
Newsweek article on the poll:
The 'full results' poll pdf doesn't have the breakdowns that would show influence on voting of negative language of whites toward AAs that shows up in the Newsweek article or the link above, or how the 2.5% swing was calculated.
Also, the poll shows only 70% of Democrats backing Obama. Most polls the past two weeks show a much higher number. The poll was taken Aug 27-Sep 05. So some people changed their minds.
No data on how much further ahead Obama would be now absent delegate-stealing, the frenzied misogyny of some of his louder supporters, or mockery of those bittercling small town folk who are afraid of him because they don't know any other 'smart' people. Or if he'd picked someone other than Biden for VP. Can't wait for those polls!

I don't buy it
If I feel (and I do) that Obama is unqualified for the office, has no scruples (for lack of a better word at the moment), was awarded the nomination instead of winning it, it makes me racist if I vote against him (or not for him)?
Okay, if you say so. But I simply cannot vote for the man. And in fact, every time I hear the racist meme it pisses me off more.
I cannot recall now if I was in the 5th or 6th grade, but we were living on a military post in VA. In the Officer's apt. housing we were in, we had a black family next to us with, I believe 3 girls. One night, the girls and their mom and I went to a softball game off post. The oldest girl got beaned with a softball so the mom and I took off looking for a convenience store to get some aspirin or whatever. Garnett sent me in to get the meds. I went to the counter asking for aspirin, Bufferin or whatever. The old fart at the counter told me to get out, calling me a nigger-lover and I don't know what else. I went back to the car crying and told Garnett what happened. I remember she went in the store and got the meds.
I'm telling this because being an Army brat, we kids all played together at post events and things. No one thought about racial issues, we were all just kids. That's the way I grew up so when I hear the racist bullshit thrown at me for not supporting Obama, well, it pisses me off.
Well for heaven's sakes, Fredster
not my post but jeeze, if the shoe doesn't fit then don't try to put it on - it will pinch.
If you aren't a racist, then good for you. And good for all those around you. That doesn't change the reality that most of Americans are bigots, especially racist bigots, in one direction or another. It is a problem for Obama just as much as sexist bigotry would have been a problem in the general election for Hillary Clinton. As it happened, this year, the assorted bigotries displayed in the Democratic primary mostly balanced out. Neither Obama nor Clinton had an advantage there.
Obama got the backing of the Democratic heirarchy in part because many of them had long-standing political and personal issues with the Clintons - both of the Clintons - and because most of them thought Obama had a better chance of winning than Hillary. It isn't more complicated than that, no double-flip half-twist reverse-deke back-door fake-out explanation required.
The powers that control the Party decided Obama was a better bet to win - that's the sum and substance of it. I disagreed, and it appears that I was correct, but it was not my year to be in charge. They, the established Democratic Party leadership, for all their faults are certainly not bigots - sexist or racist or otherwise.
I disagree as to the reasons ...
... that the anti-Clinton party leaders chose Obama. They may think that if he wins, they'll have a lot of power over him because of his inexperience. With either Hillary Clinton or John McCain, they'd have almost no power over the president at all.
And Washington is only about PERSONAL power, not about the power to do good for the country as a whole.

get real
That doesn’t change the reality that most of Americans are bigots, especially racist bigots, in one direction or another. It is a problem for Obama just as much as sexist bigotry would have been a problem in the general election for Hillary Clinton.
the "bigots" are already Republican.
Most Americans are more than willing to vote for a good Black candidate --- the only place that racism comes into play is when you have a crappy black candidate against a crappy white candidate -- because of subconscious racism, the negatives of the black candidate are perceived as more critical than they would be for an equivalent crappy white candidate.
The solution is to do what Clinton did -- be a good candidate; one whose knowledge, experience, and leadership negates any bias based on gender/race.
Don't tell me that I'm a racist because I refuse to vote for a crappy black candidate -- if you are so fucking concerned with a Democrat winning, then start a movement to get Obama to step down, and get Hillary in his place.
Well then
why come out with such a blanket statement that if you don't vote for or support Obama, you are racist?
That's what I was replying to.
That doesn’t change the reality that most of Americans are bigots, especially racist bigots, in one direction or another.
I can't read into the minds of people, so I can't tell who may be a racist or bigot or whatever. Unless I hear folks saying something racist (or sexist) or hear the not-so-nice "joke" or a laugh at something inappropriate I can't make judgments about such things and I really don't know anyone else who can either. So for someone or some group to make blanket statements about such things, is, in my opinion, bullshit.

Xenophon, black women are pissed, too
Not in similar numbers, and not as openly as some, but having the one man who could advance human rights on a large scale be the same dumb bastard as any other man running for office -- and specifically use racism as insulation for his surrogates' use of sexism throughout this campaign -- makes me damn angry.
With the level of passivity he has shown in response of the usual suspects doing what they do in terms of campaign finance, lobbying and political advice, he owes too many people and simply is not strong enough to handle a recession. Yes, McCain is much worse, but will either of them be able to avoid the chaos on the horizon, that will turn us into a failed state?

People's verdict? Come fall, you best vote for our pick or you're guilty. They've spoken, they've made their ruling.
Folks would be stupid to believe that his race doesn't play any role at all in some undecideds trying to grasp onto him, especially considering he's a historic first. But, that doesn't seem to be the problem. No one talks about how many people McCain loses because of rampant ageism allowed to fly around in broad daylight. No one even bothered to study the effects of Clinton's gender on her candidacy. No one ever polls how much Obama's race helps. No one ever bothers to ask if people have a hard time connecting to him because it's a multi-cultural, Hawaii-born, Chicago-formed academic.
The problem seems to be that the Village
has jumped the gun, and they've already written two alternate endings to the election. I guess if they say one of them enough it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, no?
But, we've always been at war with Eastasia...
What if McKinney gets a lot of votes?
How will they claim THAT is race? I know many that are seriously considering her. She's a trifecta. Black, female, and definitely good on the issues.

The "Nigger" advantage
Damom: No one ever polls how much Obama’s race helps.
According to the most recent poll by BIO Associates, the electoral benefit for Obama from his racial and ethnic identity - in terms of accrued advantages minus estimated disadvantages divided by the square root of annoyance at being asked the question - is 0.000000% with a margin of error of 0.0 give or take the barometric pressure including an adjustment for the dewpoint as measured by the wet-bulb method. So that's settled, then.
D: The problem seems to be that the Village
has jumped the gun, and they’ve already written two alternate endings to the election. I guess if they say one of them enough it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, no?
What the flying fuck does that even mean? Bupkis.
What are you doing with this, bringiton?
Translation: What the fuck were you thinking when you wrote this?
Bupkis I see, but it's not Damon's, whose argument is perfectly clear, and which I have made myself: The Village
has a set of acceptable narratives (as well as a set of acceptable candidates). It's quite clear why they would write alternative endings, and then "create their own reality" through repetition.

The poll would be more interesting
and say a lot more if it didn't just look at white views about blacks, but everyone's views on all groups, including their own. Everyone stereotypes, and its possible you'd see just as large a percent agreeing with negative adjectives about the other groups.
Also, if the poll just asked if they agreed with each of a list of negative adjectives, of course you got people agreeing. Its kind of pushing the negative. To be less biased you'd need a list of adjectives that were both positive and negative and say pick some number, say 5, that apply to X group.
Isn't it fun when the conclusions don't match available facts?
Looking at the data it looks like the fate of the nation is going to come down to the decision of white women.
Really? I don't see any links for that. Where is this data?
For one thing, Xenophon, I don't know why you're laying all this at the feet of white women when poll after poll shows that it's white men who are the ones who are voting Republican. Even that vaunted 20-point swing away from Obama after the RNC may very well be crap. See Bob Somerby for some analysis on that.
Second, you're making the mistake of taking a news article about a poll and drawing conclusions from it that are unwarranted. This is a poll that measures racial attitudes. But what are these attitudes? How strongly are they held? And most importantly, did the pollsters ask about whether these attitudes would affect the way the respondents would vote come November? The article says none of that. However, it, like you, take that 40% figure and conclude, without support, that it must mean that white women are a bunch of racists who aren't going to vote for Obama because he's black.
Third, why are you answering perceived bigotry with bigotry?

Mmm, the smell of sexism in the morning. Smells like defeat.
Tell me, why the scare quotes around "friends"? Do you think that white women don't actually have any?
You know, if you want your guy to win, perhaps you could dial down the simmering rage directed at white women. Yes, I know it must be frustrating that they're actually making noises this year, asking to be taken as seriously as other groups such as labor or farmers or religious folks, asking for their votes to be earned rather than just taken for granted. But even if the data bore out your conclusions -- and that's far from certain (I do notice you haven't actually provided any such data), given that polls show that a majority of white women support Obama -- you are going about winning their votes in quite the wrong way.
Why are you helping McCain win?

Not so fast, lambert!
Xenophon, first you say white women are pissed off. What are they pissed off AT? Misogyny and corruption of Obama and the DNC.
Then you launch into race-baiting which is spreading like a virus throughout the land. You contradicted yourself. This has nothing to do with race except Obama is a black man who used misogyny to win the nomination.
The working class and women will not vote for Obama because of the misogyny and corruption of the primary. It has nothing to do with race.
Furthermore
Brazile, Obama et al stated they do not need the working class and women to win in November. They continue to alienate the working class and women which make up the bulk of the electorate. Nothing adds up in Obama Nation.

recriminations
Xenophon has put this nicer that many people. If Obama loses we can expect years of this.
Personally I remain optimistic that he will win. While I think Obama's scorched earth primary is much to blame, I think there is a certain truth in what Xenophon says and is precisely how the world will see us.
You know, I don't much give a damn who blames me
if McCain wins, 'cause I'm not voting for him.
But I will be damned if I will sit idly by while the people who could -- no, damn it, SHOULD -- prevent McCain from winning waste their time and energy in CYA hissy fits.
I know that there is no way under the sun Hillary Clinton will be allowed to succeed in her quest to be President. The hate runs too deep. She and Bill came from Outside the Village
, with a vision that included people Not of the Beltway.
To go back to an old ST:TOS episode, she and Bill were recognized as Not of the Body, not Believers in Landru.
set out to destroy them; and because Bill and Hillary Clinton were working from real-life rather than a Gene Rodenberry script, the Village
, being more numerous and more dedicated and the Clintons having no orbital weapons platform and transporter access, is about to succeed, finally.
So the Village
But I find the Village
's choice of a meme to justify its destruction -- namely that all people not dedicated to the proposition that Barack Hussein Obama is The Second Coming, Amen, are hopeless bigot racist worthless GOP scum -- loathesome in the extreme.
I hope I can make this clear.
It is not the Obamas, Barack and Michelle and their children, who have played the race card at this level of infuriating and abominable cacophony; they are as innocent as any family in politics can be, in this day and age in America. They've done what the Clintons did in the 1980s. They've dared to dream -- and had their dreams seized by the political powers they hoped to control, instead.
What their fate may be must wait for November's revelations. But in the meantime it behooves each and every person who does not wish to live in serfdom to set aside the bitterness and name-calling, the ass-covering and divisiveness, with which the Village
has so richly rewarded its followers and enemies alike.
Stop fighting amongst factions, Democrats. Start fighting against Republicans. Step one is to deny the Bush administration this insane bailout of Wall Street, because even if Wall Street doesn't just cave in some short time later, it will have sucked all the money out of the budget for everything else this nation needs.
More bridges will fall.
More children will die.
More soldiers will go back to war with inadequate supplies.
McCain and Palin will continue merrily down the road Reagan and the Bushes and Newtie and Gramm started the nation's feet upon in 1980.
